Professor Sun Jung Myung's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research, particularly in the role of Wnt signaling in fibrotic diseases such as hepatic, pulmonary, and renal fibrosis. The lab also investigates clinical education innovations, including online medical education during public health crises and the assessment of clinical reasoning through OSCEs. Additionally, the lab explores the psychological and lifestyle impacts of pandemics on medical students using network-based analytical approaches. Their work bridges molecular mechanisms of disease with medical education and mental health research.

Wnt signaling was implicated in pulmonary and renal fibrosis. Since Wnt activity is enhanced in liver cirrhosis, Wnt signaling may also participate in hepatic fibrogenesis. Thus, we determined if Wnt signaling modulates hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation and survival. Wnt3A treatment significantly activated human HSCs, while this was inhibited in secreted frizzled-related protein 1 (sFRP1) overexpressing cells. An education program for disclosing medical errors was helpful in improving confidence in medical error disclosure. Extending the program to more diverse scenarios and a more diverse group of physicians is needed.
OSCE score from patient encounters did not reflect the clinical reasoning abilities of the medical students in this study. The evaluation of medical students' clinical reasoning abilities through OSCE should be strengthened.
