Professor Sun Min Kim's research lab specializes in developing innovative, point-of-care diagnostic technologies for obstetric complications, with a focus on multiplexed, rapid, and portable biomarker detection. The lab integrates advanced materials—particularly hydrogel microparticles fabricated via flow lithography—with immunoassay platforms to enable sensitive, high-throughput detection of key proteins such as MMP-8 and other biomarkers linked to preterm birth, preeclampsia, and intra-amniotic inflammation. A central theme is translating complex proteomic findings into clinically actionable tools for early prediction and intervention in high-risk pregnancies.

We conclude that 42% of patients with an early spontaneous preterm delivery (< 30 weeks) could be identified by a rapid MMP-8 bedside test at the time of their mid-trimester genetic amniocentesis. The MMP-8 bedside test is a powerful predictor of early spontaneous preterm birth in asymptomatic pregnant women.

Gastric fluid analysis has 100% specificity in the identification of intra-amniotic infection with Ureaplasma species. However, the detection of Ureaplasma species by culture or PCR in the gastric fluid of neonates at birth did not identify these microorganisms in two-thirds of cases with microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity. Thus, amniotic fluid analysis is superior to that of gastric fluid in the identification of intra-amniotic infection.
