研究室紹介

Professor Suneung Kwon's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research with a strong emphasis on metabolic health, hematopoietic stem cell biology, and clinical immunogenomics. The lab investigates insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome using large-scale population studies, explores in vitro generation of red blood cells from human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) for addressing blood supply challenges, and applies clinical exome sequencing to improve diagnosis of inborn errors of immunity. Additionally, the lab contributes to clinical microbiology through rapid diagnostics, such as MALDI-TOF MS for MRSA typing and transfusion reaction surveillance.

A High Alanine Aminotransferase/Aspartate Aminotransferase Ratio Determines Insulin Resistance and Metabolically Healthy/Unhealthy Obesity in a General Adult Population in Korea: The Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey 2007–2010
Soon Sung Kwon, Sang‐Guk Lee
SJR Q2Experimental and Clinical Endocrinology & DiabetesOA

AIMS: Early identification of individuals with insulin resistance (IR) and metabolically unhealthy state can help prevent various diseases and improve quality of life. In this study, we investigated a possible marker of IR and metabolic health status, alanine aminotransferase/aspartate aminotransferase (ALT/AST) ratio, and aimed to confirm its feasibility in a large population study. METHODS: A total of 16,371 adults from Korean National Health and Examination Survey were studied. Participants w

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion is an essential part of medicine. However, many countries have been facing a national blood crisis. To address this ongoing blood shortage issue, there have been efforts to generate red blood cells (RBCs) in vitro, especially from human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). However, the best source of hiPSCs for this purpose is yet to be determined. METHODS: In this study, hiPSCs were established from three different hematopoietic stem cell sources-peripheral blo

SJR Q1Frontiers in ImmunologyOA

Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) include a variety of heterogeneous genetic disorders in which defects in the immune system lead to an increased susceptibility to infections and other complications. Accurate, prompt diagnosis of IEI is crucial for treatment plan and prognostication. In this study, clinical utility of clinical exome sequencing (CES) for diagnosis of IEI was evaluated. For 37 Korean patients with suspected symptoms, signs, or laboratory abnormalities associated with IEI, CES that c

Incidence and characteristics of hypotensive transfusion reaction: 10‐year experience in a single center
Soon Sung Kwon, Sinyoung Kim, Hyun Ok Kim
SJR Q2TransfusionOA

BACKGROUND: Hypotensive transfusion reaction (HyTR) is rare. It is characterized by a rapid onset of hypotension during transfusion, which usually resolves quickly upon cessation of transfusion. Information on the incidence and clinical characteristics of HyTR has been reported in only a few studies. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed HyTR cases from 10-year hemovigilance data in a tertiary care hospital in Seoul, Korea. RESULTS: We identified 37 HyTRs in 35 patients, and the

Training of Microanastomosis with Chicken Wing Brachial Artery.

Journal of the Korean society of plastic and reconstructive surgeons

Purpose: Microsuturing is a difficult job for beginners of microsurgery. It is because they are not familiar with microscopic environment and, it needs much time for them to get used to microanastomosis. Before the real microsurgery, sometimes a surgeon wants rehearsal. But, microsurgical exercise has been performed with surgical glove, silastic drain or rat femoral artery. Rat femoral artery is a very good training material. But, it needs animal laboratory, anesthesia and its keeping facilities

Investigation of blood group genotype prevalence in Korean population using large genomic databases
Cheol O Bae, Soon Sung Kwon, Sinyoung Kim
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Blood group antigens, which are prominently expressed in red blood cells, are important in transfusion medicine. The advent of high-throughput genome sequencing technology has facilitated the prediction of blood group antigen phenotypes based on genomic data. In this study, we analyzed data from a large Korean population to provide an updated prevalence of blood group antigen phenotypes, including rare ones. A robust dataset comprising 72,291 single nucleotide polymorphism arrays, 5318 whole-exo

Background Red blood cell transfusion is frequently prescribed in the emergency department for patients with gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB), but the association of time to transfusion with patient outcome has not been thoroughly evaluated. Methods A retrospective cohort study analyzed adult patient data with GIB who visited the emergency department of single university-affiliated hospital between January 2016 and April 2022. The associations of time to transfusion and patient outcomes, 30-day an

OBJECTIVES: Identifying the potential sources of bias in the direct measurement of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is important. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of remnant cholesterol on LDL-C and HDL-C levels measured using homogenous methods. METHODS: We obtained 41 commutable frozen serum samples and measured LDL-C and HDL-C levels. Eight measurement systems were used, and the degree of bias was obtained by compari

SJR Q2TransfusionOA

The Jra antigen is the sole antigen in the JR blood group system (ISBT 032) and is recognized as a high-frequency antigen. It is encoded by the ABCG2 gene,1 with more than 20 variants identified in individuals exhibiting the Jr(a−) phenotype. The Jr(a−) phenotype occurs at a frequency of 0.03%–0.12% in the Japanese population and is significantly lower in other populations.2 Finding compatible red blood cells (RBC) for transfusion in individuals with anti-Jra antibody proves challenging due to t
