研究室紹介

Professor Sung Hee Oh's research lab focuses on viral immunology and infectious disease epidemiology, with a particular emphasis on varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and other herpesviruses. The lab investigates the immunogenicity, safety, and population-level impact of varicella vaccination, as well as the cellular immune mechanisms—such as NK cell-mediated lysis involving HLA-DR+ cells—that contribute to antiviral defense. Additional research includes the epidemiology of enteric and nosocomial infections, including antimicrobial resistance in pathogens like E. coli producing CTX-M-15 and OXA-30 beta-lactamases. The lab also explores clinical predictors of severe outcomes in viral infections such as hand, foot, and mouth disease caused by enterovirus A71.

With continuing occurrence of varicella despite increasing vaccine coverage for the past 20 years, a case-based study, a case-control study, and an immunogenicity and safety study were conducted to address the impact of varicella vaccination in South Korea. Varicella patients under the age of 16 years were enrolled for the case-based study. For the case-control study, varicella patients between 12 months and 15 years of age were enrolled with one control matched for each patient. For the immunog

Cooperation between CD16(Leu-11b)+ NK cells and HLA-DR+ cells in natural killing of herpesvirus-infected fibroblasts.

We reported previously that natural killer (NK) cell-mediated lysis of cytomegalovirus-infected targets requires the presence of HLA-DR+ nonadherent peripheral blood mononuclear cells (NPBMC). In the present study we determined whether NK cell-mediated lysis of other herpesvirus-infected targets also requires HLA-DR+ cells. Depletion of either cluster designation (CD)16+ NK cells or HLA-DR+ cells from NPBMC significantly reduced their ability to lyse herpes simplex virus (HSV)- and varicella-zos

During a survey of the prevalent subtypes of extended-spectrum beta -lactamases in a university hospital in Korea, a nosocomial outbreak of Escherichia coli producing CTX-M-15 and OXA-30 beta -lactamases was detected. The outbreak comprised various infections, including bloodstream infections and colonization, and persisted for several months in various areas of the hospital.

Update in varicella vaccination
Sung Hee Oh
Korean Journal of PediatricsOA

Varicella, which is mostly a benign disease, but also can cause considerable health burden in the community, can be prevented by immunization with live attenuated varicella vaccine. Higher uptake of varicella vaccine by universal immunization in North America has apparently been associated with decline in the number of reported cases of varicella, varicella-related hospitalizations, and the number of deaths caused by complications of varicella. On the contrary, there has been some reluctance in

Distribution of Borrelia burgdorferi specific antibody among patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in Korea

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Lyme disease, a multi-systemic infection occurring worldwide, has yet to be reported in Korea, although the spirochete B. burgdorferi, known as the causative organism of the disease, has recently been isolated from the vector tick Ixodes persulcatus in the region. To contribute to revealing whether Lyme disease exists in Korea or not, B. burgdorferi specific antibodies (IgG, IgM, and/or IgA) were measured by three individual enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) utilizing different antigens

Measles Antibodies Measured by Plaque Reduction Neutralization Test in Infants during the First Year of Life

Korean Journal of PediatricsOA

Purpose:The 2000-2001 measles epidemic resulted in more than 50,000 cases with the highest attack rate occuring in infants less than one year of age, indicating the necessity of measles immunization before 12 months of age when a measles outbreak occurs again. The study was conducted to measure maternal measles antibody in infants by plaque reduction neutralization test(PRN), for the first time in Korea, to assess the optimal age for measles vaccination before the first birthday, when necessary.
