研究室紹介

Professor Sung Hyuk Choi's research lab focuses on translational cardiovascular and neurological research, with a strong emphasis on the pathophysiological roles of trace metals like zinc in neurodegenerative diseases and the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer progression, particularly in colorectal cancer involving the APC/β-catenin and Hippo signaling pathways. The lab also investigates clinical outcomes in critical cardiovascular interventions, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) use in cardiogenic shock, and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for chronic total occlusions (CTO). Their work bridges basic science discoveries with clinical applications to improve patient outcomes in heart failure, stroke, and cancer.

Zinc in the Brain: Friend or Foe?
Seung‐Hyuk Choi, Dae Ki Hong, Bo Young Choi, Sang Won Suh
SJR Q1International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

Zinc is a trace metal ion in the central nervous system that plays important biological roles, such as in catalysis, structure, and regulation. It contributes to antioxidant function and the proper functioning of the immune system. In view of these characteristics of zinc, it plays an important role in neurophysiology, which leads to cell growth and cell proliferation. However, after brain disease, excessively released and accumulated zinc ions cause neurotoxic damage to postsynaptic neurons. On

α-Catenin interacts with APC to regulate β-catenin proteolysis and transcriptional repression of Wnt target genes

SJR Q1Genes & DevelopmentOA

Mutation of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) tumor suppressor stabilizes β-catenin and aberrantly reactivates Wnt/β-catenin target genes in colon cancer. APC mutants in cancer frequently lack the conserved catenin inhibitory domain (CID), which is essential for β-catenin proteolysis. Here we show that the APC CID interacts with α-catenin, a Hippo signaling regulator and heterodimeric partner of β-catenin at cell:cell adherens junctions. Importantly, α-catenin promotes β-catenin ubiquitylatio

Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) is an effective mechanical circulatory support for cardiopulmonary failure. Conventionally, an arterial cannula over 15 Fr is inserted for full circulatory support in peripheral VA ECMO. However, limited data are available regarding the impact of cannula size on clinical and procedural outcomes. Between January 2014 and April 2016, 165 patients underwent peripheral VA ECMO with femoral artery cannulation were enrolled in a single-center

BACKGROUND: There is no available data on clinical outcome in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) complicated by cardiogenic shock who are supported by an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) in combination with extracorporeal life support (ECLS). METHODS: We analysed 96 consecutive patients with AMI and complicating cardiogenic shock who were assisted by an ECLS system between January 2004 and December 2011. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. The secondary outcomes were the
