Professor Sung-woo An's research lab specializes in Korean traditional music, with a primary focus on the analysis of musical structure and tonal systems in sanjo, particularly the Gong-jeong (gung-jeong) and pyae-jeong modes. The lab investigates tuning systems, modal centers, and tonal relationships in traditional instruments such as the gayageum and daegeum, emphasizing the theoretical and practical implications of tonal centers in performance and composition. Their work bridges ethnomusicological analysis with practical music theory, contributing to a deeper understanding of Korean musical identity and pedagogy.

1지금까지 대금산조의 음구조와 관련된 많은 연구들이 이루어져 왔지만 중심음 설정의 문제나 시작음과 종지음의 역할 등 음구조를 분석하는 기준들에 대한 견해는 매우 다양하고 복잡하다. 본 연구에서는 김동진류 대금산조 분석을 통하여 우조과 평조의 선율을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 김동진류 대금산조 진양조의 음구조는 g우조, b♭평조, c계면조, f계면조, c계면조, f계면조, c계면조로 구성되어 있으며, 중모리는 g우조, b♭평조, c계면조로 조변화가 단조로운 편이다. 중중모리의 음구조는 g우조, f평조, b♭평조, c계면조, f계면조, c계면조, g우조, c계면조로 되어 있으며, 자진모리는 c계면조, g우조, c계면조로 구성되어 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 본 연구에서는 우조를 라․도․레․미․솔로, 평조를 솔․라․도․레․미로 분석 하였다. 이것은 우리가 익히 알고 있는 평조는 ‘솔선법’이라는 것과도 일치하며, 우조를 라․도․레․미․솔로 표시하는 것은 김희조와 김영재 등 대부분의 작곡가들이 산조 협
