Professor Sung-young Yu's research lab specializes in epidemiological and clinical ophthalmology, focusing on the prevalence, risk factors, and long-term outcomes of major eye diseases in the Korean population. The lab conducts large-scale national surveys such as KNHANES and population-based cohort studies to investigate conditions including diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal toxicity from therapeutic agents. A key emphasis is placed on understanding the burden of ocular diseases through rigorous population health research and biorepository-based analyses to inform public health policy and clinical management.

RETINAL TOXICITY OF INTRAVITREAL TRIAMCINOLONE ACETONIDE
Seung-Young Yu, Francisco Max Damico, Francesco Viola, Donald J. D’Amico, Lucy H. Young
SJR Q1RetinaOA

Single intravitreal injection of 0.5 mg or 1 mg of TA did not produce morphologic retinal changes in pigmented rabbits. However, injections of 4 mg, 8 mg, and 20 mg of TA produced outer retina toxic effects. These findings suggest that long-term retinal toxicity studies should be carried out, using single and repeated injections before this therapy becomes more widely used.

The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) is a national program designed to assess the health and nutritional status of the noninstitutionalized population of South Korea. The KNHANES was initiated in 1998 and has been conducted annually since 2007. Starting in the latter half of 2008, ophthalmologic examinations were included in the survey in order to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of common eye diseases such as visual impairment, refractive errors, strab

SJR Q1Ophthalmologica

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To investigate the effects of intravitreal ranibizumab treatment for macular edema (ME) secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and the relationship between spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) findings and visual outcome after successful resolution of ME. METHODS: Forty consecutive eyes with ME secondary to branch RVO (BRVO; 29 eyes of 29 patients) or central RVO (CRVO; 11 eyes of 11 patients) were included in a prospective study and treated with 3 initial in

Change of retinal pigment epithelial atrophy after anti-vascular endothelial growth factor treatment in exudative age-related macular degeneration

SJR Q2Indian Journal of OphthalmologyOA

RPE atrophy progresses in eyes with exudative AMD during anti-VEGF treatment. Larger areas of RPE atrophy at month 4 and larger numbers of anti-VEGF injections were associated with an increased risk of progression of RPE atrophy the following treatment. These findings may be useful to clinicians using intravitreal anti-VEGF for the treatment of exudative AMD, both for selecting an appropriate treatment plan and for predicting the progression of RPE atrophy.

SJR Q2Korean Journal of OphthalmologyOA

PURPOSE: To assess the effectiveness and safety of intravitreal ranibizumab compared with bevacizumab for the treatment of macular edema associated with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 80 eyes with macular edema associated with BRVO. Patients received either 0.5 mg of ranibizumab (n = 24) or 1.25 mg of bevacizumab (n = 56) intravitreally. Both groups received three initial monthly injections followed by as-needed injections. The best-corrected vis

Toxoplasma gondii KI-1, a recent new isolate from Korea, shows similar pathogenicity and infectivity to mice compared to the virulent RH strain. To understand characteristics of host immunity, including immune enhancement or suppression, we investigated proliferative responses and phenotypes of spleen cells. In addition, kinetics of IFN-γ, a Th1 cytokine, was examined in BALB/c mice up to day 6 post-infection (PI). Intraperitoneal injection of mice with 10(3) KI-1 tachyzoites induced significant

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To evaluate en face spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) findings of the outer retinal hard exudates in diabetic macular edema (DME). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Exploratory analyses of prospective and consecutive case series. Fifty-five eyes treated with intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) (Lucentis; Genentech, South San Francisco, CA) for 12 months were classified according to OCT features of DME: diffuse retinal thickening (DRT), cystoid macular edema (CME), an
