Professor Sungsoo Choi's research lab specializes in intergenerational social mobility, family inequality, and educational stratification, with a particular focus on how family background, including parental education, family size, and marital dynamics, shapes life outcomes across generations. The lab investigates the role of education as a key mechanism of social reproduction, especially in the context of low-fertility societies such as South Korea and other developed nations. Using longitudinal and cross-national survey data, the lab conducts innovative quantitative analyses to trace trends in educational inequality, sibling effects, and the long-term impacts of family structure on individual achievement.

How Marriage Matters for the Intergenerational Mobility of Family Income: Heterogeneity by Gender, Life Course, and Birth Cohort
Seongsoo Choi, Inkwan Chung, Richard Breen
SJR Q1American Sociological Review

Adult children’s labor market status and their type of marriage are major channels through which family advantages are passed from one generation to the next. However, these two routes are seldom studied together. We develop a theoretical approach to incorporate marriage entry and marital sorting into the intergenerational transmission of family income, accounting for differences between sons and daughters and considering education as a central explanatory factor. Using a novel decomposition met

Cohort Trends in the Association Between Sibship Size and Educational Attainment in 26 Low-Fertility Countries
Seongsoo Choi, Riley Taiji, Manting Chen, Christiaan Monden
SJR Q1DemographyOA

Children with many siblings have lower average educational attainment compared with children raised in smaller families, and this disadvantage by sibship size has been observed across many countries. We still know remarkably little, however, about how sibship size disadvantage has changed within countries and how such trends vary across countries. Using comparative data from 111 surveys from 26 low-fertility countries, we find an overall trend of growing sibship size disadvantage across cohorts

One’s number of siblings is an important determinant of many life outcomes, such as educational attainment. In the last century the United States has experienced a ‘sibsize revolution’, in which sibship sizes declined, and which led to a convergence in fam

Fewer mothers with more colleges? The impacts of expansion in higher education on first marriage and first childbirth
Seongsoo Choi

Since the mid-1990s, South Korea has undergone two remarkable social changes: a large-scale expansion in higher education and a transition to lowest-low fertility. These changes offer an appropriate quasi-experimental setting for the causal inferences of t

Where It Matters to Be the Only One: School Performance Outcomes of Only-children across 31 Countries
Seongsoo Choi, Christiaan Willem Simon Monden
OA

Despite the increasing number and visibility of only-children (children raised without any siblings) in low-fertility societies, our understanding of how they perform relative to children with siblings is surprisingly limited. Especially little is known about how only-children fare in different societies. Using data from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2000 on 15-year old students from 31 countries, we examine how family socioeconomic status (SES) and cognitive and noncog

Has Inequality of Educational Opportunity Grown in Korea? : Cohort Trends of Gaps in Educational Attainment by Parental Education over the 20th Century

How Does Job Mobility Affect Inequality? Evidence from the South Korean Economic Crisis
Seongsoo Choi
SJR Q1Social Forces

Previous research suggests that increasing job mobility leads to increasing economic inequality. In this study, I argue that an increase in job mobility can be inequality reducing, depending on the macro-structural context in which job changes become more frequent. I demonstrate empirical evidence by applying a new analytical approach to data from the South Korean economic crisis of the late 1990s. I find that rates of job transitions increased significantly during and after the economic crisis,

We examined family SES inequalities in non-cognitive skills among young Korean adolescents. Using nationally representative data for 6th graders and 9th graders between 2004 and 2014 and school-fixed effects models, we showed how internal motivation, self-esteem, sociability, perseverance, and the composite score from those four indicators differ across students with varying family SES. Additionally, we examined how family SES gaps vary by grade and test score, as well as across the quantiles of

The Double Edge of Professional Agency: The Contradictory Roles of Human Resource Professionals in the Implementation of the Parental Leave Policy in South Korea
Kyung-Min Baek, Seongsoo Choi
SJR Q1Sociological Perspectives

Why do organizations respond differently to social policies? This is an important question because it gives us a clue as to why social progress is often slow even with successful legislation. We argue that HR professionals’ conflicting roles within organizations affect modes of organizations’ compliance with a law because HR professionals are expected to adjust legal pressure to business interests when translating external requirements into internal policies. How they manage this challenge depen
