Professor Sungsoo Kim's research lab focuses on the interplay between cellular stress responses, mitochondrial function, and gut microbiota in the context of metabolic and inflammatory diseases. The lab investigates key mechanisms such as autophagy, oxidative stress, and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in conditions like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A central theme is the role of redox signaling and mitochondrial health in disease progression, with translational research exploring therapeutic agents like MitoQ. The lab also examines patient-centered outcomes in clinical settings, linking physician empathy to health behaviors and treatment adherence.
