Professor Sungwoo Lee's research lab specializes in nephrology and clinical epidemiology, with a strong focus on chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression, dialysis outcomes, and metabolic and inflammatory markers in kidney disease. The lab investigates the impact of dietary protein intake, iron metabolism (including hepcidin), and anemia on CKD outcomes, as well as the role of body composition—particularly visceral and subcutaneous fat—on mortality. Using large-scale, multicenter, prospective cohort studies, the lab aims to identify modifiable risk factors and improve patient stratification and management in CKD and dialysis populations. Their work also extends to critical care, examining outcomes in ECMO-supported patients and the implications of hyponatremia and anemia in acute kidney injury.
