Professor Sunjin Hwang's research lab specializes in posterior segment ophthalmology, with a focus on the biomechanical and microvascular changes in retinal and optic nerve head (ONH) pathologies. The lab investigates the role of imaging technologies—particularly optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA)—in assessing structural and functional outcomes following retinal and vitreoretinal surgeries. Key research directions include understanding the pathogenesis and prevention of neovascular glaucoma in diabetic retinopathy, evaluating the impact of surgical interventions such as phacovitrectomy and intravitreal bevacizumab, and exploring systemic-metabolic correlates (e.g., bioimpedance parameters) in diabetic macular edema.
