Professor Sunmee Choi's research lab specializes in revenue management, consumer fairness perceptions, and multichannel pricing strategies within the hospitality and service industries. The lab investigates how information transparency, pricing transparency, and cultural differences influence consumer perceptions of fairness and satisfaction. It also explores the role of government capability, policy knowledge, and public participation in shaping policy satisfaction, particularly in the context of public administration and governance. The lab employs experimental designs, conjoint analysis, and game-theoretic modeling to understand strategic decision-making in competitive and cross-cultural environments.

Impact of Information on Customer Fairness Perceptions of Hotel Revenue Management
Sunmee Choi, Anna S. Mattila
Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly

Despite the prospective benefits of a revenue management (RM) program, some hotel managers remain concerned that customers perceive RM as being unfair. Studies have shown that offering customers information on a hotel’s pricing practices can enhance their perceptions of fairness. To determine how much and what type of information hotels should provide in this context, researchers administered a scenario-based survey to 120 travelers. The study found that giving would-be guests relatively complet

Perceived Fairness of Price Differences Across Channels: The Moderating Role of Price Frame and Norm Perceptions
Sunmee Choi, Anna S. Mattila
SJR Q1The Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice

Abstract This study examines the effects of contrasting multichannel pricing strategies (uniform versus differential pricing) on consumers' fairness perceptions, with a focus on the moderating roles of the relative positioning of prices in the marketplace (price frame) and consumers' perceptions of the differential multichannel pricing practice as a norm in the given industry (norm perception). The results of a scenario-based survey method with 2 (uniform versus differential multichannel pricing

The Role of Disclosure in Variable Hotel Pricing
Sunmee Choi, Anna S. Mattila
Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly

An exploration of cross-cultural differences in customers’ fairness perceptions of hotel room pricing found that increasing the level of information improved fairness perceptions for respondents in both the United States and Korea. Overall, U.S. consumers seem to perceive variable pricing practices as more fair than do their Korean counterparts. The extent of pricing information offered appears to have a diverse influence across the two culture groups. While only full information had a positive

A conjoint-based product designing procedure incorporating price competition
Sunmee Choi
SJR Q1Journal of Product Innovation Management

Conjoint analysis has become a major tool in the process of designing and concept testing consumer packaged goods and industrial products. In most applications, however, product concepts are tested against existing sets of competing brands without considering potential competitive reactions. Although many researchers have recognized the need for models to incorporate competitive reactions, few methodological developments have been published thus far. Instead of what-if analysis, which depends he

Group Revenue Management
Sunmee Choi
Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly

Although proprietary hotel revenue management systems may take group business into account, substantial research is not available on revenue management for groups. A series of formulas presented here shows how to calculate the expected contribution of a prospective group’s offer. In particular, the decision on whether to accept a group’s offer depends on the opportunity cost of transient business lost when the group’s rooms are blocked. In the event that the group’s offer falls short of covering

Customer contact employees' commitment to extra-role customer service: the effect of internal service quality perception
Sunmee Choi, Juha Baek, Ha‐Young Kang
SJR Q1Journal of Global Scholars of Marketing Science

The important role of customer contact employees in creating superior customer service quality has been well demonstrated. Accordingly, extensive research has been conducted to identify antecedents of their commitment to customer service. The effect of internal service quality has been proposed as one such factor, but has not been empirically tested. We intend to fill this gap in this study. Specifically, we examine the exclusive role of perceived internal service quality in forming employee com
