Professor Taebeom Ahn's research lab focuses on the neurobiological and metabolic underpinnings of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson’s disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA). The lab investigates genetic factors such as SNCA gene duplication, gut-brain axis interactions via short-chain fatty acids, and the role of polyunsaturated fatty acids in disease progression. It also explores neuroimaging biomarkers, including dilated Virchow-Robin spaces and the cord sign, to improve early diagnosis and understanding of pathological mechanisms in parkinsonism. The research integrates clinical, metabolic, and neuroimaging approaches to uncover novel pathways and diagnostic markers in movement disorders.

OBJECTIVE: alpha-Synuclein gene (SNCA) multiplication was found in familial Parkinson disease (PD). We examined SNCA multiplication in patients with familial and sporadic PD and multiple system atrophy (MSA).
