Professor Taek Sang Lee's research lab specializes in gynecologic oncology, with a strong focus on the molecular mechanisms underlying gynecological cancers, particularly endometrial and cervical carcinomas. The lab investigates non-coding RNAs, such as microRNAs, and epigenetic alterations—including promoter hypomethylation of genes like CAGE—as key drivers in carcinogenesis. It also emphasizes translational research using clinical samples, including formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues, to identify biomarkers and improve staging systems. Additionally, the lab explores patient-reported outcomes and psychosocial impacts of HPV-related diseases, reflecting a holistic approach to cancer care.

15Clinical practice guidelines for gynecologic cancers have been developed by many organizations. Although these guidelines have much in common in terms of the practice of standard of care for uterine corpus cancer, practice guidelines that reflect the characteristics of patients and healthcare and insurance systems are needed for each country. The Korean Society of Gynecologic Oncology (KSGO) published the first edition of practice guidelines for gynecologic cancer treatment in late 2006; the sec
The modified FIGO staging for ovarian carcinoma appears superior to the current staging for discriminating survival outcomes of patients with surgical spillage, retroperitoneal LN metastasis without extrapelvic peritoneal involvement, or distant metastasis to supraclavicular LNs.
This study aimed to identify the candidate miRNAs in the carcinogenesis of endometrial carcinoma, and to explore whether FFPE material would be suitable for miRNA profiling. We identified the differences between miRNA expression profiles using human miRNA microarray in endometrioid endometrial adenocarcinomas (EECs) and normal endometria. Of those tested, miR-200a*, miR-200b*, miR-141, miR-182, and miR-205 were greatly enriched. The expressions of these five miRNAs were validated using quantitat
This study was performed to determine whether promotor hypomethylation of CAGE is involved in cervical carcinogenesis. The surgical specimens of 40 cervical squamous cell carcinoma patients treated at Seoul National University Hospital and those of 48 healthy controls were used, with informed consent. We investigated the promotor hypomethylation status of CAGE by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP) using primers specific for unmethylated sequences, and found hypomethylation of C
Objectives To estimate self-reported human papillomavirus (HPV) disease-related psychosocial impact among male and female patients in South Korea. Design In this multicentre cross-sectional study, psychosocial impacts were estimated using a one-time survey capturing HPV Impact Profile (HIP) results, CuestionarioEspecifico en Condilomas Acuminados (CECA; in Spanish)—‘Specific questionnaire for Condylomata Acuminata’ and the EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D) surveys. Student’s t-tests or Mann-Whitney U
The obliterative LFC procedure had a high success rate and was associated with minimal adverse events for the elderly patients with advanced apical prolapse. This procedure should be considered as a treatment option for the advanced apical prolapse in selected elderly women who do not want to conserve vaginal intercourse, as it offers improvement in quality of life and is associated with a low regret rate.
Currently, many studies have shown that nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin (PG) are main inflammatory mediators involved in a variety of pathophysiological processes including inflammation and carcinogenesis. In this article, we explored the possible association of polymorphisms, of two representative inflammatory mediators, with the risk for cervical cancer. This study included 176 cases of histologically confirmed invasive cervical cancer, and 172 healthy controls. Allele frequency of 12 sing
Surgical procedures for the treatment of endometrial cancer are still not standardized among Korean gynecologic surgeons. Clinical trials to determine the benefits of the different surgical procedures should be developed.
To determine whether radical hysterectomy is necessary in the treatment of endometrial cancer patients with cervical involvement, we reviewed the medical records of women who underwent primary surgical treatment for endometrial carcinoma and selected patients with pathologically proven cervical invasion. Among 133 patients, 62 patients underwent extrafascial hysterectomy (EH) and 71 radical or modified radical hysterectomy (RH). The decision regarding EH or RH was made at the discretion of the a
OBJECTIVES: Estimate the prevalence of genital warts (GW) and GW-related healthcare resource use and costs among male and female patients seeking treatment in South Korea. DESIGN: To estimate GW prevalence, physicians in five major South Korean regions recorded daily logs of patients (n=71 655) seeking care between July 26 and September 27, 2011. Overall prevalence estimates (and 95% CIs) were weighted by the estimated number of physicians in each specialty and the estimated proportion of total
As the relationship between inflammation and carcinogenesis grows stronger, the role of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and epidermal growth factor (EGFR) has been highlighted in the pathogenesis and progression of human cancer. In view of the fact that vulvar cancer is characterized by precancerous inflammatory changes in elderly patients, the expressions of COX-2 and EGFR are expected to show different patterns of distribution according to age and other prognostic factors. To verify whether there was
