Professor Taekyung Ha's research lab specializes in advancing surgical oncology and molecular imaging, with a focus on improving outcomes in gastric cancer treatment. The lab investigates the clinical efficacy of minimally invasive surgical techniques—such as robotic and laparoscopic gastrectomy—and evaluates advanced imaging modalities like ¹⁸F-FDG-PET/CT for accurate preoperative staging. A key research direction involves understanding the role of anatomical structures, such as the omentum, in postoperative complications and patient recovery. The lab also explores innovative analytical techniques in surface mass spectrometry, particularly matrix-free laser desorption/ionization for studying self-assembled monolayers.

15The use of robotic systems is assumed to provide a technically superior operative environment for minimally invasive surgery. However, our analysis of perioperative surgical outcomes indicated that robotic gastrectomy is not superior to laparoscopic gastrectomy. Clinical trials identification: NCT01309256.
Since gastric cancer patients with a synchronous second primary cancer are not rare, the possibility of synchronous cancers in gastric cancer patients should be considered. The prognosis of early stage gastric cancer patients with a synchronous second primary cancer was influenced more by the presence of the second primary cancer than by the gastric cancer itself.

We propose a new scheme of matrix-free laser desorption/ionization with cation assistance for surface mass spectrometry of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiolates on gold substrates and gold nanoparticles (NPs).
