Professor Tak Jeong's research lab specializes in the molecular and pathological characterization of primary liver cancers, with a focus on intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The lab investigates the histopathological, genomic, and transcriptomic heterogeneity of these malignancies, aiming to identify distinct subtypes based on differentiation markers, genetic alterations, and radiopathologic features. Key research directions include the classification of iCCA subtypes—particularly small duct type with cholangiolocellular differentiation or DPM (ductal-predominant morphology)—and the identification of prognostic biomarkers such as PHH3, LOXL2, FGFR, and ARID1A variants. The lab integrates multi-omics data with clinical and imaging profiles to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient stratification in liver cancer.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Primary liver cancers (LCs), including HCC and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA), are derived from a common developmental lineage, conferring a molecular spectrum between them. To elucidate the molecular spectrum, we performed an integrative analysis of transcriptome profiles associated with patients' radiopathologic features. APPROACH AND RESULTS: We identified four LC subtypes (LC1-LC4) from RNA-sequencing profiles, revealing intermediate subtypes between HCC and iCCA
iCCAs with DPM pattern have different clinico-radio-pathologic and genetic characteristics compared to conventional iCCAs. Moreover, <i>FGFR</i> and <i>ARID1A</i> variants were identified. Altogether, these findings further suggest that iCCA with DPM pattern represents a specific subtype of small duct type iCCA.

Stromal p16 expression of MC-G was significantly higher than that of normal cervix and other histological subtypes of adenocarcinoma and was associated with advanced stage, parametrial invasion, and lymphovascular invasion, reflecting the aggressive behavior of MC-G. Our observations suggest that stromal p16 expression is involved in the development and progression of MC-G.
