Professor Wan Jae Yi's research lab specializes in diagnostic radiology and biomedical imaging, with a focus on developing advanced imaging agents and techniques for early detection and precise diagnosis of gastrointestinal and urological diseases. The lab investigates pH-responsive nanomaterials for targeted MRI contrast imaging, particularly for acidic pathological environments such as tumors, and explores the radiological features of various neoplastic and inflammatory conditions, including cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder polyps, and eosinophil-related hepatic lesions. The team also evaluates clinical interventional procedures, such as emergency percutaneous nephrostomy, to improve patient outcomes in urological emergencies. Their work bridges molecular imaging, radiological diagnostics, and clinical interventional radiology to enhance disease detection and management.

PURPOSE: Percutaneous nephrostomy is a well-established standardized procedure in the management of patients with various urologic problems. A facile and powerful pH-responsive polymeric micelle encapsulates Fe3O4 nanoparticles as an acid-targeting MRI contrast agent for pathologic diagnosis. This MRI probe remains in a micellar state in the physiological environment whereas it can be dissolved in acidic pathological areas. More biomedical applications will be possible owing to its unique ability to target an acidic pathologic environment.
