Professor Won-Jae Lee's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying host-microbe interactions, particularly in the context of innate immunity and host homeostasis in Drosophila. The lab investigates how commensal microbiota influence host physiology through metabolic and signaling pathways, including insulin/IGF signaling and redox regulation. Key research directions include the role of dual oxidase (DUOX)-mediated oxidative bursts, the production of microbicidal hypochlorous acid (HOCl), and the regulation of immune responses by host transcription factors such as Caudal. The lab also develops advanced fluorescence imaging techniques to visualize real-time microbial immune responses in live organisms.

A 50-kDa hemolymph protein, having strong affinity to the cell wall of Gram(-) bacteria, was purified from the hemolymph of the silkworm, Bombyx mori.
