The clinical features of MERS-CoV infection in the Republic of Korea were similar to those of previous outbreaks in the Middle East. However, the overall mortality rate (20.4%) was lower than that in previous reports. Enhanced surveillance and active management of patients during the outbreak may have resulted in improved outcomes.

Structure-Guided Design of a High-Affinity Platelet Integrin α IIb β 3 Receptor Antagonist That Disrupts Mg 2+ Binding to the MIDAS

SJR Q1Science Translational Medicine

An integrin found on platelets, α(IIb)β(3) mediates platelet aggregation, and α(IIb)β(3) antagonists are effective antithrombotic agents in the clinic. Ligands bind to integrins in part by coordinating a magnesium ion (Mg(2+)) located in the β subunit metal ion-dependent adhesion site (MIDAS). Drugs patterned on the integrin ligand sequence Arg-Gly-Asp have a basic moiety that binds the α(IIb) subunit and a carboxyl group that coordinates the MIDAS Mg(2+) in the β(3) subunits. They induce confor

VITRECTOMY FOR MACULAR DISORDERS ASSOCIATED WITH LAMELLAR MACULAR HOLE EPIRETINAL PROLIFERATION
Wonseok Choi, Daniel J. Merlau, Stanley Chang
SJR Q1Retina

PURPOSE: To compare the surgical outcome of a lamellar macular hole (LMH) depending on lamellar hole-associated epiretinal proliferation (LHEP) and full-thickness macular hole. METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review. Thirty-three patients were enrolled for this study. The patients were divided into three groups depending on the type of macular hole and presence of LHEP. Group 1 had epiretinal membranes with LMH without LHEP, Group 2 had LMH with LHEP, and Group 3 had full-thickness macula

Expression of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) gag, pol, and env proteins from chimeric HIV-1-poliovirus minireplicons
Won Suk Choi, Ruma Pal‐Ghosh, Casey D. Morrow
SJR Q1Journal of VirologyOA

Recent studies have demonstrated that genomes of poliovirus with deletions in the P1 (capsid) region contain the necessary viral information for RNA replication. To test the effects of the substitution of foreign genes on RNA replication and protein expression, chimeric human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-poliovirus genomes were constructed in which regions of the gag, pol, or env gene of HIV-1 were substituted for regions of the P1 gene in the infectious cDNA clone of type 1 Mahoney pol

BACKGROUND: From 2002 through 2006, Republic of Korea conducted extensive measles elimination activities and declared elimination in 2006. An outbreak of measles involving 180 confirmed cases occurred during 2007. METHODS: An outbreak investigation was performed and enhanced surveillance was implemented. Detailed case investigations and laboratory testing included serologic and molecular diagnostic methods. Cases were classified according to World Health Organization and national guidelines. RES

Acinetobacter baumannii has been increasingly reported as a significant causative organism of various nosocomial infections. Here we describe an outbreak of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB) in the ICUs of a Korean university hospital, along with a successful outbreak control program. From October 2007 through July 2008, CRAB was isolated from 57 ICU patients. Nineteen patients were diagnosed as being truly infected with CRAB, four of whom were presumed to have died due to CRAB infection,

Three-dimensional reconstruction of intact human integrin αIIbβ3: new implications for activation-dependent ligand binding

SJR Q1BloodOA

Integrin αIIbβ3 plays a central role in hemostasis and thrombosis. We provide the first 3-dimensional reconstruction of intact purified αIIbβ3 in a nanodisc lipid bilayer. Unlike previous models, it shows that the ligand-binding head domain is on top, pointing away from the membrane. Moreover, unlike the crystal structure of the recombinant ectodomain, the lower legs are not parallel, straight, and adjacent. Rather, the αIIb lower leg is bent between the calf-1 and calf-2 domains and the β3 Inte

SJR Q1PolymersOA

Large-sized or deep skin wounds require skin substitutes for proper healing without scar formation. Therefore, multi-layered skin substitutes that mimic the genuine skin anatomy of multiple layers have attracted attention as suitable skin substitutes. In this study, a novel skin substitute was developed by combining the multi-layer skin tissue reconstruction method with the combination of a human-derived keratinic extract-loaded nano- and micro-fiber using electrospinning and a support structure

SJR Q1Journal of VirologyOA

The determinants of immune recognition by five monoclonal antibodies (KK5, KK9, KK17, Senv7.1, and Senv101.1) that neutralize simian immunodeficiency virus infectivity were analyzed. These five neutralizing monoclonal antibodies were generated to native SIVmac251 envelope glycoprotein expressed by a vaccinia virus recombinant vector. All five recognize conformational or discontinuous epitopes and require native antigen for optimal recognition. These monoclonal antibodies also recognize SIVmac239

Sensitivity based Error Resilient Techniques for Energy Efficient Deep Neural Network Accelerators
Wonseok Choi, Dongyeob Shin, Jongsun Park, Swaroop Ghosh

With inherent algorithmic error resilience of deep neural networks (DNNs), supply voltage scaling could be a promising technique for energy efficient DNN accelerator design. In this paper, we propose novel error resilient techniques to enable aggressive voltage scaling by exploiting different amount of error resilience (sensitivity) with respect to DNN layers, filters, and channels. First, to rapidly evaluate filter/channel-level weight sensitivities of large scale DNNs, first-order Taylor expan
