Professor Wonshik Han's research lab specializes in translational breast cancer research, focusing on the molecular and cellular heterogeneity of breast tumors at the single-cell level. The lab investigates the tumor microenvironment, including immune and stromal cell interactions, and explores genomic alterations—particularly in triple-negative and young-onset breast cancers—aimed at identifying novel therapeutic targets. They also examine biomarkers such as mammographic density to predict response to endocrine therapy and evaluate the evolving role of sentinel lymph node biopsy in early-stage disease.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of breast cancer in young women (age < 35) is low. The biology of the disease in this age group is poorly understood, and there are conflicting data regarding the prognosis for these women compared to older patients. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 2040 consecutive primary invasive breast cancer patients who underwent surgical procedures at our institution between 1990 and 1999. BACKGROUND: Following sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB), the axillary recurrence rate is very low although SLNB has a false-negative rate of 5-10%. In the ACOSOG Z0011 trial, non-sentinel positive-lymph nodes were found in more than 20% of the axillary dissection group; the SLNB only group did not have a higher axillary recurrence rate.
