Professor Woongsun Seon's research lab focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal cell death, mitochondrial dynamics, and neurodegenerative diseases, particularly in the context of adult neurogenesis and motoneuron survival. The lab investigates key regulators such as Bax and Drp1 in programmed cell death and mitochondrial fission, exploring their roles in neuronal development, maintenance, and degeneration. Using genetic mouse models and cellular assays, the lab examines how post-translational modifications and mitochondrial morphology influence neuronal fate and function. Additionally, the lab explores neuroprotective strategies, such as hepatocyte growth factor overexpression, in models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
