Professor Yi Kyung-Woo's research lab specializes in sustainable metallurgy and molten salt electrochemistry, focusing on the development of green and efficient processes for the production of high-purity magnesium and iron metals from secondary and primary resources. The lab explores innovative electrolytic methods using molten salt systems—such as MgF₂–LiF and B₂O₃–Na₂O—to enable low-carbon metal extraction with high current efficiency and reduced environmental impact. Key research directions include the valorization of industrial by-products like slag and refractory waste, and the electrochemical reduction of oxides under optimized thermal and electrochemical conditions. The lab also investigates energy-efficient processes for carbon dioxide mitigation in ironmaking through molten oxide electrolysis.

15A green and effective electrolytic process was developed to produce high-purity Mg metal using primary and secondary resources containing MgO as a feedstock. The electrolysis of various MgO resources was conducted using a Cu cathode in MgF2 – LiF – KCl molten salt at 1043 K by applying an average current of 1.44 A for 12.5 h.
