Professor Yong Jin Jung's research lab specializes in liver disease pathogenesis, with a focus on non-invasive fibrosis assessment, viral hepatitis (particularly hepatitis B virus), and the role of microRNAs in liver disease progression. The lab investigates molecular mechanisms underlying liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, including the regulatory roles of miR-17-92 cluster in HBV replication and the diagnostic performance of elastography techniques such as ARFI, TE, and SSI in NAFLD and cirrhotic patients. The lab also explores cancer stem cell biology, particularly in non-epithelial origins, highlighting novel mechanisms of tumor initiation and metastasis. These studies integrate molecular biology, clinical hepatology, and advanced imaging to improve diagnosis and therapeutic strategies for chronic liver diseases.

15BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) includes a wide spectrum of heterogeneous metabolic subtypes. This study compared the diagnostic performances of noninvasive fibrosis tests in predicting advanced fibrosis among patients with NAFLD and examined the effects of the subgroups on their diagnostic performances. METHODS: Three hundred fifteen patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD were prospectively enrolled. Acoustic radiation force impulse imaging (ARFI) was performed to obtain
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate post-transcriptional gene expression in various physiological and pathological processes, including viral infections. The miR-17-92 cluster encodes six miRNAs (miR-17-5p, miR-18a, miR-19a, miR-19b, miR-20a, and miR-92a-1) which are transactivated by c-Myc. Because hepatitis B virus transactivates c-Myc, the interaction between the miR-17-92 cluster and HBV replication was examined in this study. Inducing HBV replication in a human hepatoma cell line increased miR-17-5
The diagnostic performance of supersonic shear imaging (SSI) in comparison with those of transient elastography (TE) and acoustic radiation force impulse imaging (ARFI) for staging fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients has not been fully assessed, especially in Asian populations with relatively lean NAFLD compared to white populations. Thus, we focused on comparing the diagnostic performances of TE, ARFI, and SSI for staging fibrosis in a head-to-head manner, and identify
BACKGROUND AND AIM: The aims of this study were to investigate whether acid suppressive therapy increases the risk of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) and to define factors associated with mortality in cirrhotic patients with SBP. METHODS: Cirrhotic patients who had undergone paracentesis after hospitalization were included. Those patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of SBP. Factors associated with the development of SBP were analyzed. Mortality rates
Esophageal varix and its hemorrhage are serious complications of liver cirrhosis. Recent studies have focused on noninvasive prediction of esophageal varices. We attempted to evaluate the association of liver and spleen stiffness (LS and SS) as measured by acoustic radiation force impulse imaging, with the presence and severity of esophageal varices and variceal hemorrhage in cirrhotic patients. We measured LS and SS, along with endoscopic examination of esophageal varices for a total of 125 cir
Our findings demonstrate that SK cells represent a transformation mechanism of normal MSC into an enhanced self-renewal CSC with metastasis capacity, SK cells and their xenografts represent a same relative homogeneity of CSC with substantial metastatic capacity. Thus, it represents a novel mechanism of tumor initiation, development and metastasis by CSCs of non-epithelial and endothelia origin.
Nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) have been shown to decrease the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence. This study evaluated whether high-potency NAs (entecavir and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate [TDF]) reduce the risk of tumour recurrence more potently than low-potency NAs after curative treatment of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCC. This study included 607 consecutive HBV-related HCC patients treated with surgical resection or radiofrequency ablation. The patients were categorized i
Acute hepatitis A (AHA) is one of the most common infectious diseases; it is usually a self-limiting disease affecting the liver. Although extrahepatic manifestations are not common, some cases have been reported associated with acute renal failure. We reviewed the clinical features of patients with AHA complicated by acute renal failure (ARF group) and compared them with patients with noncomplicated AHA (non-ARF group). The medical records of 208 consecutive patients with AHA who were diagnosed
Although there were differences in the frequency of occurrence, various adverse reactions were confirmed in using all 4 COVID-19 vaccines, even with the BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) vaccine. Caution is needed, and further research should be continuously conducted.
Objective:Fas/FasL polymorphisms, which are related to apoptosis, might influence the clearance of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and the occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study was performed to determine whether Fas and FasL promoter polymorphisms are associated with clinical outcome in chronic HBV infection. Methods: A total of 1,095 Korean subjects were prospec
Fib-4 and Lok index were useful noninvasive fibrosis indices for predicting advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis in Asian patients with hepatitis C. In addition, ARFI elastography exhibited acceptable diagnostic performance in the assessment of hepatic fibrosis in patients with hepatitis C.
