Professor Yong Joo Park's research lab specializes in educational psychology and learning science, with a focus on innovative assessment methods and active learning strategies in educational settings. The lab investigates how computerized testing systems—particularly hybrid formats combining short-answer and multiple-choice questioning—can enhance student learning, critical thinking, and knowledge transfer. Research also explores the cognitive mechanisms underlying attention and memory, such as negative priming, and applies these insights to improve teaching methodologies in both K-12 and higher education, including dental and medical training. The lab emphasizes evidence-based approaches to curriculum design, especially through technology-enhanced learning and writing-to-learn interventions.

In this system, the question of a multiple-choice problem is presented first, and the options appear briefly on the request of the test taker. The crux of this manipulation is to force students to solve the problem as if they were solving an open-ended question but to respond in a multiple-choice format.
