Professor Yong-sung Choi's research lab specializes in translational biomedical research with a focus on immunology, neuroprotection, and respiratory medicine in neonatal and preterm infants. The lab investigates the molecular regulation of immune responses, particularly in germinal center B cells and TNF superfamily signaling, while also developing novel therapeutic agents such as selenoflavanones for neuroprotection and synthetic pulmonary surfactants for preterm lung disease. A key direction involves understanding the role of the microbiome and early microbial colonization in neonatal conditions like necrotizing enterocolitis and transient tachypnea of the newborn. The lab integrates chemical synthesis, in vitro and in vivo disease models, and clinical correlations to advance treatments for critical neonatal disorders.

Selective N-acetylation of (1<i>S</i>,2<i>R</i>)-1-amino-2-indanol by immobilized lipase B from <i>Candida antarctica</i> showed high enantiomeric excess when ethyl acetate was used as the acyl donor in a THF solution. Combining this process with continuous-flow system, we could obtain enantiomerically pure <i>N</i>-acetyl-aminoindanol at a flow rate of 0.1 mL/min (residence time of 64 min). It has been demonstrated to be more efficient compared to the flask mode.
The physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity of a molecule could be improved by the substitution of an oxygen atom in a molecule with selenium. We synthesized selenoflavanones and flavanones to evaluate their neuroprotective effects.
