研究室紹介

Professor Yongsin Kim's research lab specializes in clinical anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, with a strong focus on patient temperature regulation during surgery, particularly in elderly and high-risk populations. The lab investigates the efficacy of various warming strategies—such as forced-air warming and circulating water mattresses—to prevent hypothermia and post-anaesthesia shivering. Additional research explores the physiological and metabolic impacts of pharmacological agents, like salbutamol, in animal models, particularly in relation to fetal and postnatal development. The lab also examines respiratory and hemodynamic influences on intraocular pressure during anesthesia, especially under one-lung ventilation conditions.

Comparison of Three Warming Devices for the Prevention of Core Hypothermia and Post-Anaesthesia Shivering
CH Ihn, J-D Joo, HS Chung, JW Choi, Dongwook Kim, Y-S Jeon, YS Kim, WY Choi
SJR Q3Journal of International Medical Research

The efficacy of forced air warming with a surgical access blanket in preventing a decrease in core temperature during anaesthesia and post-anaesthesia shivering (PAS) was compared with two widely used interventions comprising forced air warming combined with an upper body blanket, and a circulating water mattress, in a prospective, randomized double-blind study. A total of 90 patients undergoing total abdominal hysterectomy were studied, 30 in each group. Core temperature was measured 15, 30, 45

Effect of maternal administration of salbutamol to sows on post-natal growth and carcass characteristics in the progeny
YS Kim, R. D. Sainz, J Ferlazzo, NM Tulloh
Australian Journal of Agricultural Research

The effects of salbutamol administration to pregnant sows on post-natal growth and carcass characteristics of the progeny were investigated. Salbutamol (4 mg/kg diet) was fed to sows during the first (0 to 38 days, TI), second (39 to 78 days, T2) or third (79 days to term, T3) trimester of pregnancy. At birth, maternal administration of salbutamol had no effect on body weight, dressing percentage or weights of liver, heart, semimembranosus and semitendinosus muscle in proportion to body weight i

Intra-Operative Warming with a Forced-Air Warmer in Preventing Hypothermia after Tourniquet Deflation in Elderly Patients
YS Kim, Y-S Jeon, J.I. EUN LEE, W-K Park, H-S Koh, J-D Joo, J-H In, K-W Seo
SJR Q3Journal of International Medical Research

This randomized, single-blind study aimed to explore the effects of intra-operative warming with a forced-air warmer in the prevention of hypothermia after tourniquet deflation in elderly patients undergoing unilateral total knee replacement arthroplasty under general anaesthesia. Patients were randomized to receive either intra-operative warming using a forced-air warmer with an upper body blanket (warming group; n = 12) or no intra-operative warming (nonwarming group; n = 12). Oesophageal temp

Simon's Steady State Assumption: A Critique of Okabe's Critique
YS Kim
SJR Q1Environment and Planning A Economy and Space

Simon's model of city-size distributions has been a classical way of explaining the rank-size rule. But the steady state condition he uses to solve his model was shown by Okabe to be mathematically inconsistent with the basic postulates of the model. Okabe is correct as long as the difference between individual city size and total population is small. But when t (total number of population units) is only moderately larger than i (individual city size), as it always would be in actual application

Effects of Positive End-Expiratory Pressure on Intraocular Pressure during One-Lung Ventilation in the Lateral Decubitus Position—A Prospective Randomized Trial

SJR Q2MedicinaOA

Background and Objectives: The effect of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on intraocular pressure (IOP) is debatable. There have been no studies investigating the effects of PEEP on IOP during one-lung ventilation (OLV). We aimed to investigate the effects of PEEP on IOP in patients undergoing OLV for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATs). Materials and Methods: Fifty-two patients undergoing VATs were divided into a zero-PEEP (ZEEP) and a 6 cmH2O of PEEP (PEEP) groups. IOP, ocular p

A Perspective on Non-invasive Continuous Cardiac Output in the Critically Ill
YS Kim
Pure Amsterdam UMC

The thermodilution technique is the accepted clinical method of estimating cardiac output (CO), but it is discontinuous and requires the presence of a pulmonary artery catheter for as long as CO monitoring is needed. Continuous monitoring of CO allows for the detection of rapid effects on systemic flow and conductance that may otherwise remain unnoticed in a recording of arterial pressure or heart rate. We consider such information on the circulation beyond what is detected by arterial pressure,

Hepatic protective effect of Trapa japonica pericarp in vitro and in vivo
YS Kim, JW Hwang, Se Hee Kim, Bi You, NJ Jeon, Xiufang Dong, PJ Park
SJR Q2Planta Medica

In this study, the hepatic protective effect of the Trapa japonica pericarp ethanolic extract were evaluated. The ethyl acetate fraction (EF) showed protective effects against tert-butylhydroperoxide (t-BHP)-induced oxidative damage in vitro and in vivo. In vitro experimental results showed that the EF suppressed t-BHP-induced damage in Chang cells by inhibiting reactive oxygen species generation and regulating the mitochondrial membrane potential. Furthermore, western blot analysis showed that

Generalized Difference in Differences for Ordinal Responses with a Varying Number of Categories
YS Kim, Mi‐Jeong Lee
RePEc: Research Papers in Economics

Ordinal responses often represent verbal descriptions (e.g., happy, neutral, and un-happy). Sometimes, ordinal responses with different numbers of categories have to be used together, as in comparing happiness across different periods/countries. One way to proceed is collapsing some of them such that the same ordinal scale holds for all responses. But this loses information, and how to exactly collapse the ordinal responses is not obvious. We show how to use multiple ordinal responses without eq
