Professor Yongsuk Kim's research lab focuses on knowledge sharing, social network dynamics, and organizational innovation in digital and distributed work environments. The lab investigates how individuals and communities collaborate across boundaries—both formally and informally—through online platforms and social media, with an emphasis on the role of network structures in enhancing responsiveness, knowledge transfer, and innovation. Research also extends to educational outcomes and the longitudinal impact of social support on academic achievement, as well as engineering reliability in critical infrastructure such as railway contact wires. The lab integrates theoretical frameworks from organizational sociology, knowledge management, and social psychology with empirical data from diverse settings including global enterprises, educational institutions, and industrial systems.

External Bridging and Internal Bonding: Unlocking the Generative Resources of Member Time and Attention Spent in Online Communities1
Yongsuk Kim, Sirkka L. Järvenpää, Bin Gu
SJR Q1MIS Quarterly

Sharing members with other online communities can be problematic for community responsiveness, as less member time and attention become available for the focal community. However, member time and attention spent externally have the potential to generate knowledge that bolsters the focal community’s responsiveness. Little is known about when member time and attention spent externally become such generative resources. Building on and extending the knowledge collaboration theory of online communiti

Formal Boundary Spanning and Informal Boundary Spanning in Cross-Border Knowledge Sharing: A Case Study
Yongsuk Kim, Sirkka L. Järvenpää

The paper expands theoretical and empirical understanding of the interaction between formal boundary spanning mechanism (i.e. individuals formally nominated to span boundaries for knowledge sharing) and informal boundary spanning mechanism (i.e., informal seeking of information via social ties crossing boundaries) in a far-flung operation of a global company. Through a case study of engineering groups at a U.S. based manufacturing plant, we found that both formal and informal boundary spanning m

Fatigue life prediction method for contact wire using maximum local stress

Railway contact wires supplying electricity to trains are exposed to repeated mechanical strain and stress caused by their own weightand discontinuous contact with a pantograph during train operation. Since the speed of railway transportation has increased continuously, railway industries have recently reported a number of contact wire failures caused by mechanical fatigue fractures instead of normal wear, which has been a more common failure mechanism. To secure the safety and durability of conta

Online Tie Formation in Enterprise Social Media
Yongsuk Kim, Gerald C. Kane
SJR Q3Asia Pacific Journal of Information Systems

We study the antecedents to tie formation on an (Facebook-like) enterprise social media platform implemented to support cross-boundary connections. Research has produced mixed findings regarding the role of social media in cultivating bridging vs. closed networks. We examine the tie formation patterns of 1,386 enterprise social media users over a two-year period. Specifically, we observe who became (or chose not s become) “friends” with whom at the dyadic level and relate the decisions to variou

Contact wire is one of the most important components supplying electricity to railroad cars. At the beginning of the research on contact wire, wear problem caused by friction between contact wire and pantograph was considered even more important issue for the failure of contact wire. However, since several fatigue fractures were reported from Shinkansen in Japan, fatigue fracture has become another important issue for the failure of contact wire. Despite of its importance, standard of the fatigu

Research has produced mixed findings regarding the role of social media in cultivating bridging vs. Closed networks. We examine the tie formation patterns of 1,386 enterprise social media users over a two-year period. We first find that users tend to form ties via reciprocity and transitivity (with friends of friends). As for whom they initiate ties with in the firs

Microchip sensor of PdO-NiO electrode for H2O2 sensing fabricated with the UV photolithography
Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering

An electrochemical microchip sensor was fabricated through the photolithographic process. The metal paste used in the micro-pattern of the sensor chip contained dendritic and spherical Ag-coated Cu powders, which decreased the electrical resistance of the pattern down to 25.69·cm by forming a network for electron transfer between particles. The electrode materials were dendritic palladium oxide-nickel oxide powders that showed dramatically high surface area. Also, a synergetic effect on the sen

Development of Thermal Gradient Prediction Method for Thermal Barrier Coating

Thermal barrier coatings (TBC) protect the components of gas turbines from severe environments by reducing the surface temperatureof the substrate. Therefore, an accurate prediction of the temperature gradient (temperature drop) in TBC is an important issue whenestimating the exact life of the components. Material properties of bulk ceramic are often used for the analysis. However, Bulkmaterials do not have the same material properties as thin ceramic layers due to differences in processing and

Mobilizing Online Social Capital: The Relational View of Crowdfunding
Yongsuk Kim, Zhixing Zhang
SJR Q1Journal of the Association for Information Systems

As crowdfunding platforms are increasingly linked to third-party social media platforms, questions arise as to whether project initiators can leverage their online friendships as sources of funding for their crowdfunding campaigns and, if so, how and through what mechanisms online friendships affect individual funding decisions. Taking a relational view, we examine the effects of tie strength and embeddedness on funding decisions. Our analysis of social media-mediated ties and crowdfunding campa

Yongsuk Kim
SJR Q4Journal of Korea Trade

Purpose – This study presents strategies to overcome the COVID-19-induced crisis in Korea’s meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) industry. It aims to quantitatively identify the environmental factors affecting the industry and their degree of influence, and derive optimal countermeasures. Design/methodology – The study applied the SWOT-AHP-TOWS framework. An AHP analysis was first performed within the SWOT frame, and then a TOWS analysis was conducted using the r

Spanning Multiple Online Communities and Knowledge Contribution : The Cross-Level Moderating Effects of Environmental Scanning and Membership Fluidity
Yongsuk Kim
SJR Q3Asia Pacific Journal of Information Systems

Many organizations facilitate a host of online knowledge sharing communities to assist internal knowledge sharing and operation. The permeable boundaries and voluntary structures of online communities allow individuals to span community boundaries and affect member resources and structures. Although much research has been done on members’ knowledge contribution in online communities, relatively little is known about how a member’s contribution to a community is shaped by the cross-level interact
