Professor Yoolwon Jeong's research lab focuses on public health and preventive medicine, with a strong emphasis on infection control, antimicrobial resistance, and the impact of lifestyle and social factors on chronic disease outcomes. The lab investigates the role of probiotics in preventing antibiotic-associated complications, evaluates infection prevention and control capacity in healthcare settings, and explores the long-term health implications of early-life factors such as birth weight and body mass index. Their work bridges clinical microbiology, population health, and health system performance, particularly in the context of pandemics and antimicrobial stewardship.

15OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of depression in medical students and to evaluate whether interpersonal social support, health-related behaviors, and socio-economic factors were associated with depression in medical students. METHODS: The subjects in this study were 120 medical students in Seoul, Korea who were surveyed in September, 2008. The subjects were all women and over the age of 20. Their age, body mass index (BMI), quality of sleep, diet, household
Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) is a common complication of antibiotic use. There is growing interest in probiotics for the treatment of AAD and Clostridium difficile infection because of the wide availability of probiotics. The aim of this multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial was to assess the efficacy of probiotic Lactobacillus (Lacidofil® cap) for the prevention of AAD in adults. From September 2008 to November 2009, a total of 214 patients with respiratory tra
Our findings and lessons learnt from the pandemic can aid in the development of future national TB control program.
Children with lower birth weight or higher BMI were at an increased risk of chronic respiratory illness. In addition, children who were initially in the lowest birth weight tertile but are now in the highest weight tertile had higher risk of chronic respiratory illness compared to those who remained in the middle tertile.
BACKGROUND: The current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic continues to underscore the inadequacy of infection prevention and control (IPC) and the importance of its sound establishment in healthcare facilities. The Infection Prevention and Control Assessment Framework (IPCAF) by the World Health Organization allows systematic assessment of IPC capacity in healthcare facilities and has been applied in many national-level surveys. This study aims to assess the IPC capacity of Korean hospitals as well as their s
In this population-based study, the prevalence of severe exacerbations in patients with mild-to-moderate COPD was relatively low, compared with previous clinical interventional studies. Coexisting asthma significantly impacted the frequency of severe exacerbations in patients with mild-to-moderate COPD, suggesting application of an exacerbation preventive strategy in these patients.
The documented vaccine coverage rate of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination is almost 99% in Korea, but measles cases are constantly being reported. This study evaluated the vaccine coverage, timeliness, and barriers to immunization of measles vaccination in preschool children in Korea. We assessed 452 children aged 15-23 months and 300 children aged 4-6 years in September 2007. Questionnaires were administered in order to estimate measles vaccination rate, its timeliness and barriers to vac
Recent advancements in tuberculosis treatment research emphasize innovative strategies that enhance treatment efficacy, reduce adverse effects, and adhere to patient-centered care principles. As tuberculosis remains a significant global health challenge, integrating new and repurposed drugs presents promising avenues for more effective management, particularly against drug-resistant strains. Recently, the spectrum concept in tuberculosis infection and disease has emerged, underscoring the need f
Background: The clinical and prognostic implications of asymptomatic tuberculosis remain poorly understood. Methods: We conducted a multicentre prospective cohort study to evaluate the association between asymptomatic tuberculosis (TB) and treatment outcomes. Individuals with rifampicin-susceptible pulmonary TB were enrolled from the Cohort Study of Pulmonary Tuberculosis. Asymptomatic TB was defined as the absence of any TB-related symptoms at diagnosis. The primary outcome was a favourable out
Objective: This study analyzed the mortality trends from avoidable causes in Korea from 1997 to 2021, to estimate its contribution to the overall mortality in different subgroups, including. Gender, age, and cause of disease. Methods: The all-cause and avoidable mortality were presented as a time series plot and average annual percent change. Trend of avoidable mortality was also analyzed by subgroups, disease causes and the percentage attributed to each causes. Results: The decline in avoidable
