Professor Young-Joon Lee's research lab focuses on the biological and biochemical properties of natural products, particularly wild herbs and plant-derived compounds, with an emphasis on their anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, and antioxidant effects. The lab investigates molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance, adipogenesis, and bone mineral density regulation, often using cell culture models (e.g., 3T3-L1 adipocytes) and clinical studies in children and adolescents. A key research direction involves identifying bioactive compounds and their roles in modulating metabolic markers like leptin, adiponectin, RBP4, and kisspeptin in relation to obesity and puberty onset.

SJR Q1MoleculesOA

Wild herbs, which are edible plants that grow in mountainous areas, have diverse biological effects such as anti-obesity and anti-cancer activities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the total phenolic and flavonoid contents as well as the antioxidant activity of methanol extracts of Aster scaber, Ligularia fischeri, Kalopanax pictus, Codonopsis lanceolata, and Cirsium setidens and to assess their effects on lipid accumulation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production during adipogenesis

Journal of Korean Medical Science

Body weight is positively associated with bone mineral density but the relationship between obesity and bone mineral density is unclear. Leptin and adiponectin are potential independent contributors to bone mineral density. We assessed the correlations of body composition, leptin and adiponectin with bone mineral density, and whether leptin, adiponectin and body composition determine bone mineral density independently in prepubertal girls. Forty-eight prepubertal girls were classified into obese

Journal of Korean Medical Science

Central precocious puberty (CPP) is caused by premature activation of hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion. Kisspeptin and G-protein coupled receptor-54 system is the essential gatekeeper of the reproductive system, playing a key role in the activation of the gonadotropic axis at puberty. We aimed to determine whether serum kisspeptin may function as a marker for CPP by investigating serum kisspeptin levels in Korean girls with CPP and their prepubertal controls. Serum ki

Young‐Jun Lee, Kui‐Jin Kim, Kee‐Jai Park, Bo‐Ra Yoon, Jeong‐Ho Lim, Ok‐Hwan Lee
SJR Q1International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

Buckwheat sprouts contain various bioactive compounds including rutin which have a number of biological activities. We have previously shown that buckwheat sprouts (TBWE) treated with methyl jasmonate (MeJA) significantly increased the amount of phenolics and the antioxidant activity. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effect of TBWE on anti-adipogenesis and pro-oxidant enzyme in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. We also evaluated the anti-oxidative activity of TBWE in adipocytes by using the nitrobl

Association of Serum Retinol Binding Protein 4 with Adiposity and Pubertal Development in Korean Children and Adolescents
Journal of Korean Medical Science

Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) has been postulated to provide a new link between obesity and insulin resistance. We aimed to assess the relationship between serum RBP4 and insulin resistance by investigating serum RBP4 levels in children and adolescents according to degree of obesity and pubertal stage. A total of 103 (30 lean, 39 overweight, 34 obese)were evaluated for serum RBP4, adiponectin, insulin, glucose and lipid profiles. RBP4levels of obese and overweight groups were higher than thos

SJR Q1Chemical ScienceOA

Glycerophospholipids (GPLs) perform numerous essential functions in biology, including forming key structural components of cellular membranes and acting as secondary messengers in signaling pathways. Developing biomimetic molecular devices that can detect specific GPLs would enable modulation of GPL-related processes. However, the compositional diversity of GPLs, combined with their hydrophobic nature, has made it challenging to develop synthetic scaffolds that can react with specific lipid spe

Journal of Korean Medical Science

Exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), particularly during developmental periods, gives rise to a variety of adverse health outcomes. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-known EDC commonly found in plastic products including food and water containers, baby bottles, and metal can linings. This study investigates infant exposure to BPA and the effect of bottle-feeding on serum BPA levels in infants. Serum BPA levels in normal healthy infants 6 to 15 months of age (n=60) were evaluated by a com

SJR Q2Frontiers in PsychologyOA

Introduction: Children and adolescents with disabilities face increased mental health challenges and lack of access to exercise. Olympic combat sports (OCS) such as judo, taekwondo, and others might encourage social engagement, self-control, and resilience. However, not much is known about their mental health impact on this population. Methods: Following PRISMA-P protocols (PROSPERO registration: CRD42023452489), we searched seven databases for randomized controlled trials or non-randomized tria
