研究室紹介

Professor Young Seon Hong's research lab focuses on metabolic and neuroendocrine disorders, with a strong emphasis on the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and their associated complications. The lab investigates the interplay between adipose tissue (particularly epicardial fat), insulin resistance, and cardiovascular risk factors, while also exploring neurobiological mechanisms in mood disorders through the glutamatergic system and astrocyte function. Additional research directions include gastrointestinal dysfunction in diabetes, such as colonic transit and constipation, and diagnostic challenges in thyroid nodules, particularly the risk stratification of AUS/FLUS findings using imaging and clinical features.

Disturbance of the Glutamatergic System in Mood Disorders
Chansoo Jun, Yera Choi, Soo Mee Lim, Sujin Bae, Young Sun Hong, Jieun E. Kim, In Kyoon Lyoo
SJR Q2Experimental NeurobiologyOA

The role of glutamatergic system in the neurobiology of mood disorders draws increasing attention, as disturbance of this system is consistently implicated in mood disorders including major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Thus, the glutamate hypothesis of mood disorders is expected to complement and improve the prevailing monoamine hypothesis, and may indicate novel therapeutic targets. Since the contribution of astrocytes is found to be crucial not only in the modulation of the glutam

SJR Q1Diabetes & Metabolism JournalOA

BACKGROUND: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is suggested to play an important role in the progression of metabolic syndrome. We aimed to establish a simple method to measure EAT and examine the differences in EAT thickness according to the presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus or obesity. METHODS: A total of 94 patients (42.6% type 2 diabetes mellitus, 53.2% obese, mean age 61±13) who underwent multidetector computed tomography were enrolled. Thickness of EAT was measured on the parasternal short

Colonic Transit Time in Diabetic Patients - Comparison with Healthy Subjects and the Effect of Autonomic Neuropathy
Hye‐Kyung Jung, Doe Young Kim, Il Hwan Moon, Young Sun Hong
SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

Constipation and the use of laxatives are relatively common in patients with diabetes mellitus. However, the mechanisms responsible for the constipation are unclear. Even though autonomic neuropathy is regarded as one of the important mechanisms of constipation, it requires further clarification. In addition, the colonic function in diabetic patients requires further investigation. The aim of this study was to compare the colonic transit time between patients with diabetes mellitus and healthy s

Hye Ah Lee, Won Kyung Lee, Kyoung-Ae Kong, Namsoo Chang, Eun‐Hee Ha, Young Sun Hong, Hyesook Park
SJR Q2Journal of Preventive Medicine and Public HealthOA

This study showed that being overweight or obese during preadolescence is associated with a higher risk of metabolic syndrome and is related to unhealthy eating behaviors. Thus, weight-control strategies and healthy eating behaviors should be developed early in life to reduce the risk for metabolic syndrome.

SJR Q3International Journal of EndocrinologyOA

Atypia of undetermined significance/follicular lesion of undetermined significance (AUS/FLUS) in thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a challenging category. The malignancy risk is different by multiple factors and subsequent management strategy is inconclusive. Therefore, we analyzed the malignancy risk of AUS/FLUS according to radiological and clinical features. A total of 687 nodules that had been initially diagnosed as AUS/FLUS were retrospectively reviewed from 6365 thyroid FNAs between

SJR Q4Journal of the Korean Medical Association

Disclosure of a diagnosis of cancer to patients is a major problem among physicians in Korea. Many questions arise when considering issues involved in telling the diagnosis of cancer beyond the question of whether to tell. But there has been no consensus guideline on how, and in what context, to tell the diagnosis of cancer to the patients. The review of the literature reveals that the attitudes of physicians on the truth telling have been changing from favoring non-disclosure to disclosure over
