Professor Young-Sun Kim's research lab focuses on gender and sex differences in gastrointestinal disorders, particularly in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), exploring the role of sex hormones and gender-related pathophysiology. The lab also investigates innovative, minimally invasive therapeutic technologies such as radiofrequency ablation and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for treating benign thyroid nodules and tumors. Additionally, the lab examines metabolic risk factors, including visceral obesity and insulin resistance, in relation to colorectal adenoma and cardiovascular risk in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

15Because of the sex-gender differences that are shown in a diversity of physiological and psychological factors, it can be speculated that the clinical presentation of symptoms as well as treatment strategies in women and men with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may differ. Studies have revealed that IBS is more common in women than men. As for the IBS subtype, IBS with constipation is significantly more prevalent among women than men. Sex hormones and gender differences may play important roles i
BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori-associated gastrointestinal diseases have been widely recognized. The aims of this study were to investigate the interval change of seropositivity of H. pylori between 1998 and 2005 in Korean adult population and to find the factors related to H. pylori infection. METHODS: Between January and December of 2005, a total of 15,916 health check-up subjects (aged > or = 16 years) from all parts of South Korea responded to the questionnaire, and the prevalence of H. pyl
CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ultrasound (US)-guided percutaneous radiofrequency (RF) ablation for benign cold thyroid nodules as a nonsurgical therapeutic modality. DESIGN, INTERVENTION, AND PATIENTS: A total of 35 benign cold thyroid nodules in 30 euthyroid patients (M:F = 2:28; mean age 39.1 years) underwent percutaneous RF ablation with a 1-cm-internally cooled electrode. Seventy-seven percent (23/30) of patients required conscious sedation for discomfort. We
High-intensity focused ultrasound therapy is a novel, emerging, therapeutic modality that uses ultrasound waves, propagated through tissue media, as carriers of energy. This completely non-invasive technology has great potential for tumor ablation as well as hemostasis, thrombolysis and targeted drug/gene delivery. However, the application of this technology still has many drawbacks. It is expected that current obstacles to implementation will be resolved in the near future. In this review, we p
It is important to understand sex and gender-related differences in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) because gender-related biologic factors might lead to better prevention and therapy. Non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) affects more women than men. GERD symptoms are more frequent in patients with NERD than in those with reflux esophagitis. However, men suffer pathologic diseases such as reflux esophagitis, Barrett's esophagus (BE), and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) more frequently than w
Visceral obesity was found to be an independent risk factor of colorectal adenoma, and insulin resistance was associated with the presence of colorectal adenoma.
Individuals with ultrasonographically detected NAFLD have an elevated 10-year risk of developing CHD as estimated using FRS. Furthermore, NAFLD was found to be independently related to the risk of developing CHD, regardless of classical risk factors and other components of MS.
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Colorectal cancer screening is recommended for average-risk persons beginning at age 50. However, information about the incidence and risk factors of precursor adenoma in preceding decades is limited. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of colorectal adenoma in persons aged 40-49 years and to compare the data with those aged 30-39 years and 50-59 years. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 5254 asymptomatic subjects who underwent screening co
The clinical role of magnetic resonance image-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) is rapidly expanding due to its merit of non-invasiveness. MR thermometry based on a proton resonance frequency shift technique is able to accurately measure HIFU-induced temperature changes, which provides considerable advantages over ultrasonography-guided HIFU in terms of safety and therapeutic efficacy. Recent studies and the resulting technological advances in MR-HIFU such as MR thermometry for
As the clinical role of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the liver grows, the importance of radiologic imaging after liver RFA to depict the diversity of post-RFA manifestations is also increasing. Because RFA induces coagulation necrosis of the hepatic parenchyma, cross-sectional imaging studies, in principle, demonstrate an area with a defect in contrast enhancement. However, for various reasons, such as the occurrence of a complication, the RFA zone may demonstrate different patterns or be ac
Volumetric MR-guided HIFU ablation with a one-layer strategy is safe and effective for treatment of large uterine fibroids. Effectiveness of this strategy showed a significant negative correlation with K(trans) values at baseline DCE MR imaging.
