Professor Youngdon Kim's research lab specializes in clinical and anatomical neuroscience, with a focus on neurosurgical approaches, cerebrovascular anomalies, and advanced neuroimaging techniques. The lab investigates critical neonatal respiratory management strategies to predict chronic lung disease, explores rare vascular variations with surgical implications, and applies in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy to differentiate spinal cord pathologies. Their work also includes quantitative surgical anatomy, particularly in the far-lateral approach to the posterior fossa, enhancing precision in neurosurgical interventions.

We present two rare cases of anomalous vertebral artery (VA) with retroesophageal right subclavian artery. One patient had a right VA arising from the right common carotid artery (CCA), and a left VA originating from the third branch off the aorta. It appeared that acquisition of in vivo 1H-NMR signals was possible in human spinal mass lesions on a 1.5 T clinical MRI unit. Detection of choline only in the spinal tumors may indicate that there is some potential in using in vivo 1H-MRS to distinguish spinal tumors from disc herniation mimicking spinal cord tumors, non-multiple sclerosis myelitis, and dermoid cysts. On the basis of our NMR findings, however, it was not possible to distinguish between benign diseases.
