Professor Yun Soo Park's research lab specializes in the intersection of nanophotonics and biomedical engineering, focusing on the development of advanced optoelectronic devices and the epidemiological and clinical investigation of antimicrobial resistance. The lab explores innovative photonic crystal structures to enhance light extraction in GaN-based LEDs, contributing to next-generation lighting and display technologies. Concurrently, it investigates the molecular epidemiology, risk factors, and clinical outcomes of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae, particularly in community-onset infections, with an emphasis on antimicrobial stewardship and public health implications. The lab integrates materials science with clinical microbiology to address both technological innovation and pressing global health challenges.

The most common types of ESBLs in E. coli causing community-onset bacteremia were CTX-M-15 and CTX-M-14 in Korea. To the Editor: Rates of resistance to various antimicrobial drugs are rapidly increasing in Escherichia coli, not only in health care settings but also in the community. The food supply is suspected as a potential source of antimicrobial-resistant E. coli strains, which include cephalosporin-resistant E. coli found in retail meat products and other types of food (1).
