研究室紹介
Professor Yunhee Kang's research lab focuses on maternal and child nutrition, particularly in low- and middle-income countries in South Asia and Southeast Asia. The lab investigates the determinants and long-term impacts of early-life undernutrition, including stunting, wasting, and underweight, with an emphasis on community-based interventions and participatory nutrition promotion. Research directions include improving child growth through culturally adapted feeding programs, understanding the role of food insecurity during pregnancy, and exploring the sociolinguistic dimensions of identity among migrant families in multilingual contexts.

15Stunting (length-for-age z score < -2) before 2 years of age has shown associations with poor child developmental indicators, but information at the population level is scarce in South Asia, the region with the highest burden of stunting. We examined associations between z scores (i.e., height for age [HAZ], weight for age [WAZ], and weight for height [WHZ]) and undernutrition (i.e., stunting [HAZ < -2], wasting [WHZ < -2], and underweight [WAZ < -2]) with learning/cognition and social-emotional
Few trials have shown that promoting complementary feeding among young children is effective in improving child linear growth in resource-challenged settings. We designed a community-based participatory nutrition promotion (CPNP) programme adapting a Positive Deviance/Hearth approach that engaged mothers in 2-week nutrition sessions using the principles of 'learning by doing' around child feeding. We aimed to test the effectiveness of the CPNP for improving child growth in rural Ethiopia. A clus
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between household food insecurity and dietary diversity in the past 24h (dietary diversity score (DDS, range: 0-9); minimum dietary diversity (MDD, consumption of three or more food groups); consumption of nine separate food groups) among pregnant and lactating women in rural Malawi. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Two rural districts in Central Malawi. SUBJECTS: Pregnant (n 589) and lactating (n 641) women. RESULTS: Of surveyed pregnant and lactatin
BACKGROUND: School closures and family economic instability caused by the COVID-19 lockdown measures have threatened the mental health and academic progress of adolescents. Through secondary data analysis of World Vision Asia Pacific Region's COVID-19 response-assessments in May-June 2020, this study examined whether adolescents' study, physical, and leisure activities, psychosocial status, and sources of COVID-19 information differed by gender. METHODS: The assessments used cross-sectional surv
Childhood malnutrition remains endemic in South Asia, although the burden varies by country. We examined the anthropometric status and risk factors for malnutrition among children aged 0-59 months through the 2015 National Nutrition Survey in Bhutan. We assessed in 1,506 children nutritional status (by z-scores of height-for-age [HAZ], weight-for-height [WHZ], and weight-for-age [WAZ]), estimating prevalence, adjusted for survey design, of stunting, wasting, underweight, and overweight (<-2 for
Abstract The prevalence of childhood stunting in Myanmar is one of the highest among the countries of Southeast Asia. Cross‐sectional data from the Myanmar Demographic Health Survey 2015–2016 were used to examine risk factors for stunting, wasting, and underweight among children aged 0–59 months. The prevalence of stunting, wasting, and underweight was 29.0%, 7.3%, and 19.2%, respectively. Accounting for sampling design and weights, multivariable logistic regression was conducted with 35 househo
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based participatory nutrition promotion (CPNP) programme involving a 2-week group nutrition session in improving child feeding and hygiene practices among caregivers. DESIGN: Cluster randomized trial. In the intervention area (six clusters), the CPNP programme was added to the context of government nutrition programmes; the control area (six clusters) received the government programme only. Child feeding practices were assessed every 3 mont
Study objectives were to identify the prevalence and risk factors associated with the newly revised WHO indicator of minimum dietary diversity (MDD) among children aged 6–23 months in 7 countries in East and Southern Africa and to identify shared risk factors of programmatic importance across countries. MDD was defined as having >5 of 8 food groups including breastmilk in the past 24 hours. We used Demographic and Health Survey data from four East African countries, (Ethiopia 2015, n = 2965; Tan
This paper explores how Indonesian undocumented migrants in an East Coast city of the United States experience and express their ‘illegality’ due to their unauthorized or not-yet-authorized movement. More specifically, it explores ‘illegality’ as a phenomenological mode of ‘being-in-the world,’ by focusing on Indonesian migrants'embodied and subjective daily experiences. My analysis of the Indonesian migrants' daily experiences of ‘illegality’ reveals how their macro-level legal and social condi
The soil-borne ascomycete fungus Cylindrocarpon destructans causes ginseng root rot disease and produces various secondary metabolites such as brefeldin A and radicicol. The slow growth of this fungus compared with other plant pathogenic and saprophytic fungi in soil disturbs isolation of this fungus from soil and infected ginseng. In this study, we developed a selective medium for C. destructans using radicicol produced by this fungus. Supplementing 50 mg/L of radicicol to medium inhibited the
In April 2020, Vietnam initiated a country-wide lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19. This secondary data analysis evaluates whether NGO-supported households ( n = 3,431) reporting to be severely impacted by the lockdowns differ from those reporting a lesser impact, regarding food availability within households and at markets and affordability. 19.2% of respondents indicated that the pandemic had severely impacted their livelihoods. In the severely impacted group, there was a higher percentag
