Professor Yunhee Park's research lab focuses on translational immunology and molecular mechanisms underlying inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, with a particular emphasis on lung fibrosis, autoimmune liver diseases, and the role of key signaling molecules such as TGF-β1 and metallothionein in tissue injury and protection. The lab investigates host-pathogen interactions, including tuberculosis diagnostics in rheumatic disease patients, and explores natural compounds with anti-tumor and immunomodulatory properties. Using both in vivo models and in vitro cell systems, the lab integrates clinical data with molecular and cellular analyses to identify novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers.

15Prior studies have reported the presence of lung fibrosis and enhanced airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in mice with high-fat-diet (HFD)-induced obesity. This study evaluated the role of TGF-β1 in HFD-induced AHR and lung fibrosis in a murine model. We generated HFD-induced obesity mice and performed glucose and insulin tolerance tests. HFD mice with or without ovalbumin sensitization and challenge were also treated with an anti-TGF-β1 neutralizing antibody. AHR to methacholine, inflammatory cel
We compared the results and differences of indeterminate rates between the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) and QuantiFERON-TB Gold PLUS (QFT-PLUS) tests in patients with rheumatic diseases and analyzed the associated factors. Data of patients with rheumatic diseases who had undergone the QFT-GIT or QFT-PLUS test were used, and information regarding patient demographics, primary diagnosis, laboratory results, and medications was collected. Furthermore, indeterminate result rates of the pati
BACKGROUND: Hypothermic protection against ischemic stroke has been reported by many studies. Hypothermia is supposed to mitigate the effects of deleterious genes and proteins and promote the activity of protective genes and proteins in the ischemic brain. Metallothionein (MT)-1/2 is thought to be a crucial factor for metal homeostasis, immune function, and apoptosis. This protein was found to exert protective effects in models of brain injury as well. In the present study, we investigated the e
We aimed to determine the significance of cytoplasmic antinuclear antibody (ANA) patterns using computer-aided immunofluorescence microscopy in patients with autoimmune liver diseases (AILD). ANA staining pattern was identified by treating cultured human epithelial type 2 (HEp-2) cells with the sera of the patients. Medical records of patients with suspected AILD who had positive cytoplasmic ANA patterns between February 2017 and November 2019 were retrospectively reviewed for clinical, laborato
BACKGROUND: The performance of Cell-Dyn Sapphire (Abbott Diagnostic, USA) was compared to the Bayer Advia 2120 (Bayer Diagnostics, USA), Sysmex XE-2100 (Sysmex Corporation, Japan), and reference microscopy. METHODS: Three hundred samples for routine CBC and WBC differentials were randomly chosen for a comparison analysis. The Cell-Dyn Sapphire system was evaluated according to the linearity, imprecision, inter-instrument correlations, and white blood cell differential. RESULTS: The CBC parameter
BACKGROUND: Cytokines are known to play critical roles in the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). However, the relationship between cytokines and treatment responses to drugs for CHB is not clearly defined yet. We measured the serum cytokine levels of interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, vascular endothelial growth factor, interferon-γ, tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-α), macrophage/monocyte chemotactic protein 1, and epidermal growth factor to elucidate the cytokine exp
Japanese encephalitis is prevalent throughout the temperate and tropical regions of Asia and is caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a mosquito-borne viral pathogen. The plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) is currently recommended as the gold standard test for detecting human antibodies against JEV. The plaque assay is the most widely used method for detecting infectious virions and involves counting discrete plaques in cells. However, it is time-consuming, and results can be
The aqueous extract from the cultural mycelium of Paecilomyces japonica showed cytotoxicity against several tumor cells including Jurkat, U937, HL-60, HepG2, BW5147.G.1.4, and NIH3T3. When the aqueous extract was fractionated by sequential organic solvent extractions using n-hexane and ethyl acetate, the ethyl acetate fraction appeared to contain the most cytotoxic activity, and the IC 50 values for various tumor cells were in the range from 1.5 to 10.0 μg/ml. To elucidate the cellular mechanism
The cobas 6800 and Aptima assays, with fully automated and high-throughput molecular platforms for HIV-1, HBV, and HCV VL measurements, show good analytical performance and a strong correlation between results. The study results suggest that the assays can be used interchangeably for long-term monitoring of chronic infections.
OBJECTIVE: LIA-ANA-Profile-17S is a multiplex line immunoassay that simultaneously detects 17 antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) against extractable nuclear antigens (ENAs). We evaluated the utility of LIA-ANA-Profile-17S as a supplement to ANA indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) and EliA ENA (a fluorescence enzyme immunoassay) for diagnosis of ANA-associated rheumatic diseases. METHODS: Sera were collected from 245 patients referred for an ANA IIF test. LIA-ANA-Profile-17S results were compared with t
