15The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surgical movement and postoperative orthodontic treatment (POT) of the surgery-first approach for the correction of skeletal class III malocclusion. The samples consisted of 11 patients with skeletal class III malocclusion who underwent nonextraction treatment and 2-jaw surgery (Le Fort I osteotomy impaction of the posterior maxilla, IPM; bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy setback of the mandible). The wafer was removed 4 weeks after surgery. M
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the morphometric changes in the alveolar bone and roots of the maxillary anterior teeth (MXAT) after en masse retraction with maximum anchorage (EMR-MA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The samples consisted of 37 female adult patients who had Class I dentoalveolar protrusion (CI-DAP) and were treated by extraction of the first premolars and EMR-MA. Using three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography taken before treatment and after space closure, the maxillary central incisors (
Clear overlay appliances (COAs) are widely used in orthodontic fields because they offer many advantages, such as cost-effectiveness, good formability, and good optical characteristics. However, it is necessary to frequently replace COAs because the thermoplastic polymers that are used to fabricate COAs have poor abrasion resistance and have a tendency to induce bacterial accumulation. Here, we have developed polysaccharide-based antibacterial multilayer films with enhanced durability, intended
Zwitterionic polymers have extraordinary properties, that is, significant hydration and the so-called antipolyelectrolyte effect, which make them suitable for biomedical applications. The hydration induces an antifouling effect, and this has been investigated significantly. The antipolyelectrolyte effect refers to the extraordinary ion-responsive behavior of particular polymers that swell and hydrate considerably in physiological solutions. This actuation begins to attract attention to achieve <
Clear thermoplastic retainers have been widely used in daily orthodontics; however, they have inherent limitations associated with thermoplastic polymer materials such as dimensional instability, low strength, and poor wear resistance. To solve these problems, we developed a new type of clear orthodontic retainer that incorporates multi-layer hybrid materials. It consists of three layers; an outer polyethylenterephthalate glycol modified (PETG) hard-type polymer, a middle thermoplastic polyureth
OBJECTIVE: To determine the difference in the effects of facemask with miniplate (FM-MP) anchorage on maxillary protraction in growing cleft patients between unilateral (UCLP) and bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The samples consisted of a UCLP group (N = 15, 13 boys and 2 girls; mean age 10.98 years; mean protraction duration 2.37 years) and a BCLP group (N = 15, all boys; mean age 11.42 years; mean protraction duration 2.36 years), who were treated with the
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the three-dimensional (3D) perioral soft tissue changes after orthodontic treatment in patients with dentoalveolar protrusion using structured light-based scanners. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-four Korean adults (19 men and 25 women, 21.4 ± 3.4 years) with dentoalveolar protrusion treated by extraction of all four first premolars and then en masse retraction with maximum anchorage were evaluated. Lateral cephalograms and 3D facial scans were obtained before treatment (T1)
OBJECTIVE: To determine the initial compensation, preoperative decompensation, and postoperative compensation of the lower incisors according to the skeletal anteroposterior discrepancy and vertical type in skeletal Class III patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The samples consisted of 68 skeletal Class III patients treated with two-jaw surgery and orthodontic treatment. Lateral cephalograms were taken before preoperative orthodontic treatment (T0) and before surgery (T1) and after debonding (T2).
With increased esthetic needs, orthodontics is an indispensable medical treatment in dentistry, and transparent clear overlay appliances (COAs) are in general use to fix teeth. However, COAs are easily worn out because of the lack of durability. Here, we applied a nanofilm onto COAs using urushiol (U), a durable coating material from plant via a layer-by-layer assembly technique. In particular, polymerized urushiol (PU) provided COAs with higher mechanical strength in the large-scale assessment,
OBJECTIVES: Since palatal temporary skeletal anchorage devices (TSADs) have become important tools for orthodontic treatment, this narrative review was aimed to provide an updated and integrated guidelines for the clinical application of palatal TSADs. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: A narrative review article including researches on palatal TSADs in orthodontics related to anatomy, success rate and clinical application. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The anatomical characteristics, success rate and its
