BACKGROUND & AIMS: We explored whether growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) affects the histological severity of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) independent of insulin resistance. METHODS: In a biopsy-proven NAFLD cohort, we measured serum GDF15 levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. RESULTS: Among 190 subjects (mean age, 53 ± 14 years; men, 52.1%), 72 (men, 65.3%) and 78 (men, 44.9%) were diagnosed with biopsy-proven non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) and non-alcoholic ste

SJR Q1Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

BACKGROUND AND AIM: We investigated the effects of PNPLA3 rs738409, TM6SF2 rs58542926, and MBOAT7-TMC4 rs641738 variants on metabolic phenotypes and their combined effects on the histological severity of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS: We genotyped rs738409, rs58542926, and rs641738 in biopsy-proven NAFLD patients (n = 416) and healthy controls (n = 109). Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance and adipose tissue insulin resistance were calculated. RESULTS: The rs7

Our study measured the national incidences of T2DM, CAD, CVD, and PAD, which are of great concern for public health. We also confirmed the relatively higher risk of CAD and CVD newly detected T2DM patients compared to the general population in Korea.

AIMS: Kir6.2 is found in the pancreatic B-cell, cardiac and skeletal muscle and non-vascular smooth muscle. KCNJ11, encoding Kir6.2, has been shown to be associated with both Type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease in several populations. In this study, we investigated whether polymorphisms in KCNJ11 are associated with Type 2 diabetes and other metabolic phenotypes in the Korean population. METHODS: We sequenced KCNJ11 to identify common polymorphisms using 24 Korean DNA samples. Of

SJR Q1Journal of Cachexia Sarcopenia and MuscleOA

Abstract Background We investigated the association between muscle strength and the prevalence of advanced fibrosis among individuals with non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) using a nationwide cross‐sectional survey. Methods Individuals, 20 to 79 years of age, from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES) from 2014 to 2016 were selected ( N = 14 861), with sample weights applied. Muscle strength was quantified as the handgrip strength divided by the body mass

SJR Q1Journal of Cachexia Sarcopenia and MuscleOA

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is an independent risk factor not only for advanced-stage non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) but also for mortality. We investigated the association of sarcopenia and/or NAFLD with mortality among the Korean general population. METHODS: Individuals aged 35-75 years without any history of cancer, ischaemic heart disease, ischaemic stroke, or secondary causes of chronic liver disease were selected from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from

Difference between old and young adults in contribution of β‐cell function and sarcopenia in developing diabetes mellitus
Bo Kyung Koo, Eun Roh, Ye Yang, Min Kyong Moon
SJR Q1Journal of Diabetes InvestigationOA

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: To investigate the difference in contributing factors in developing diabetes between old and young adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects with recent-onset diabetes were selected from a nationwide survey data and classified according to age: elderly (age ≥75 years), middle-age (age 45-64 years) and young (age 25-39 years). The homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance and β-cell function were calculated. Sarcopenia was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

SJR Q2Endocrine JournalOA

Olfactory neuroblastomas are rare, slow-growing malignant tumors, usually diagnosed at advanced stages. Ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) syndrome caused by an olfactory neuroblastoma is extremely rare. We reported two Korean women who suffered from ectopic ACTH syndrome (EAS) caused by olfactory neuroblastomas. The first patient was a 66-year-old woman who had been diagnosed as olfactory neuroblastoma and refused the management two years before and the second patient was a 37-year-old

Autoantibodies can facilitate diagnostic and therapeutic means for type 1 diabetes (T1DM). We profiled autoantibodies from serum samples of 16 T1DM patients, 16 type 2 diabetic (T2DM) patients, and 27 healthy control subjects with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) by using protein microarrays containing 9,480 proteins. Two novel autoantibodies, anti-EEF1A1 and anti-UBE2L3, were selected from microarrays followed by immunofluorescence staining of pancreas. We then tested the validity of the candidat

Assessment of Muscle Quantity, Quality and Function
Bo Kyung Koo
SJR Q1Journal of Obesity & Metabolic SyndromeOA

Sarcopenia is a syndrome characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength that can increase the risk of physical disability, chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases, and long-term mortality. Sarcopenia adversely affects not only the elderly population, but also young adults. This review provides updated definitions of sarcopenia and recommendations for the assessment of muscle quantity and quality.

This study focused on the characterization of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) from the chorion of human full term placenta from 15 donors. Chorionic MSCs revealed homologous fibroblast-like morphology and expressed CD73, CD29, CD105, and CD90. The hematopoietic stem cell markers including HLA DR, CD11b, CD34, CD79a, and CD45 were not expressed. The growth kinetics of their serial passage was steady at the later passages (passage 10). The multilineage capability of chorionic MSCs was demonstrate
