15All-polymer solar cells have shown great potential as flexible and portable power generators. These devices should offer good mechanical endurance with high power-conversion efficiency for viability in commercial applications. In this work, we develop highly efficient and mechanically robust all-polymer solar cells that are based on the PBDTTTPD polymer donor and the P(NDI2HD-T) polymer acceptor. These systems exhibit high power-conversion efficiency of 6.64%. Also, the proposed all-polymer sola
All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) consisting of polymer donors (<i>P</i>Ds) and polymer acceptors (<i>P</i>As) have drawn tremendous research interest in recent years. It is due to not only their tunable optical, electrochemical, and structural properties, but also many superior features that are not readily available in conventional polymer-fullerene solar cells (fullerene-PSCs) including long-term stability, synthetic accessibility, and excellent film-forming properties
Conspectus All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs), consisting of conjugated polymers as both electron donor (P D ) and acceptor (P A ), have recently attracted great attention. Remarkable progress has been achieved during the past few years, with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) now approaching 8%. In this Account, we first discuss the major advantages of all-PSCs over fullerene–polymer solar cells (fullerene-PSCs): (i) high light absorption and chemical tunability of P A, which affords simultan
The molecular weight of a conjugated polymer is one of the key factors determining the electrical, morphological, and mechanical properties as well as its solubility in organic solvents and miscibility with other polymers. In this study, a series of semicrystalline poly[(2,5-bis(2-hexyldecyloxy)phenylene)-alt-(5,6-difluoro-4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole)] (PPDT2FBT) polymers with different number-average molecular weights (M(n)'s) (PPDT2FBT(L), M(n) = 12 kg/mol; PPDT2FBT(M), M(n
A strategy for controlling the location of gold nanoparticles within block copolymer domains through varying the surface coverage of gold nanoparticles by end-attached polymer ligands is described. Gold nanoparticles coated by short thiol end functional polystyrene homopolymers (PS-SH) ( M n = 3.4 kg/mol) are incorporated into a poly(styrene- b -2-vinylpyridine) diblock copolymer template (PS- b -P2VP) ( M n = 196 kg/mol), the P2VP block of which has a more favorable interaction with a bare gold
The effectiveness of side-chain engineering is demonstrated to produce highly efficient all-polymer solar cells (efficiency of 5.96%) using a series of naphthalene diimide-based polymer acceptors with controlled side chains. The dramatic changes in the polymer packing, blend morphology, and electron mobility of all-polymer solar cells elucidate clear trends in the photovoltaic performances.
Abstract Photocrosslinkable bromine‐functionalized poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT‐Br) copolymers designed for application in solution‐processed organic photovoltaics are prepared by copolymerization of 2‐bromo‐3‐(6‐bromohexyl) thiophene and 2‐bromo‐3‐hexylthiophene. The monomer ratio is carefully controlled to achieve a UV photocrosslinkable layer while retaining the π–π stacking feature of the conjugated polymers. The new materials are used as electron donors in both bulk heterojunction (BHJ) and
Despite the recent breakthroughs of polymer solar cells (PSCs) exhibiting a power conversion efficiency of over 17%, toxic and hazardous organic solvents such as chloroform and chlorobenzene are still commonly used in their fabrication, which impedes the practical application of PSCs. Thus, the development of eco-friendly processing methods suitable for industrial-scale production is now considered an imperative research focus. This Review provides a roadmap for the design of efficient photoacti
Films of a symmetric A–B diblock copolymer and A-coated Au nanoparticles cast from a selective solvent for A develop a lamellar surface layer. The surface layers have a low volume fraction of nanoparticles in the A lamellae atop a substrate layer of B cylinders/spheres in an A matrix containing a larger volume fraction of nanoparticles (see Figure). This arrangement thus induces an order–order transition between block-copolymer phases as their concentration is increased.
Abstract The energy level alignment of the perovskite and hole transporting materials (HTMs) is essential for increasing the open‐circuit voltage ( V oc ) and enhancing the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, new sequentially fluorinated poly(triarylamine) polymers (PTAA, 1F‐PTAA, and 2F‐PTAA) with tuned highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels are developed and applied as HTMs into PSCs. The fluorination approach successfully leads to stepwise downshifting
Abstract Sodium‐metal batteries (SMBs) are considered as a compliment to lithium‐metal batteries for next‐generation high‐energy batteries because of their low cost and the abundance of sodium (Na). Herein, a 3D nanostructured porous carbon particle containing carbon‐shell‐coated Fe nanoparticles (PC‐CFe) is employed as a highly reversible Na‐metal host. PC‐CFe has a unique 3D hierarchy based on sub‐micrometer‐sized carbon particles, ordered open channels, and evenly distributed carbon‐coated Fe
While the regioregularity (RR) of conjugated polymers is known to have a strong influence on their inherent properties, systematic study of the RR effect has been limited due to the lack of a synthetic methodology. Herein, we successfully produced a series of poly(3-hexylthiophene)s (P3HTs) having a wide range of RR from 64 to 98%. Incorporation of controlled amounts of head-to-head (H–H) coupled dimer in modified Grignard metathesis polymerization allows a facile tuning of the RR of the P3HTs w
Recent advances in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) have greatly enhanced their commercial viability. Considering the technical standards (e.g., mechanical robustness) required for wearable electronics, which are promising application platforms for OSCs, the development of fully stretchable OSCs (f-SOSCs) should be accelerated. Here, a comprehensive overview of f-SOSCs, which are aimed to reliably operate under various forms of mechanical stress, including bend
