15BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori causes chronic gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcers, and gastric cancer, and has been treated with two antibiotics (amoxicillin and clarithromycin) and proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs). However, antibiotic treatment alters the indigenous gut microbiota to cause side effects. Therefore, the effects of probiotic supplementation on therapy have been studied. Although several studies have covered the probiotics' effects, details about the gut microbiota changes after H. pylo
PURPOSE: The poor prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is, in part, due to the high rate of recurrence even after "curative resection" of tumors. Therefore, it is axiomatic that the development of an effective prognostic prediction model for HCC recurrence after surgery would, at minimum, help to identify in advance those who would most benefit from the treatment, and at best, provide new therapeutic strategies for patients with a high risk of early recurrence. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: For th
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although triple combination therapy containing a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and two antibiotics is considered as a standard regimen for the first-line anti-Helicobacter pylori treatment, there are still debates on the ideal duration of treatment. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacies of 7-day and 14-day PPI-containing triple therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was performed in a randomized, multicenter, prospective manner. After upper gastrointestinal e
AIMS: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) increases the risk of diabetes mellitus (DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and mortality. Sarcopenia has been reported as a risk factor for MetS, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and CVD. To date, the association between sarcopenia and MetS has been investigated. However, there have been few studies on the dose-response relationship between sarcopenia and MetS. We investigated the association between sarcopenia and the prevalence of MetS. We also aimed
BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) includes a wide spectrum of heterogeneous metabolic subtypes. This study compared the diagnostic performances of noninvasive fibrosis tests in predicting advanced fibrosis among patients with NAFLD and examined the effects of the subgroups on their diagnostic performances. METHODS: Three hundred fifteen patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD were prospectively enrolled. Acoustic radiation force impulse imaging (ARFI) was performed to obtain
The diagnostic performance of supersonic shear imaging (SSI) in comparison with those of transient elastography (TE) and acoustic radiation force impulse imaging (ARFI) for staging fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients has not been fully assessed, especially in Asian populations with relatively lean NAFLD compared to white populations. Thus, we focused on comparing the diagnostic performances of TE, ARFI, and SSI for staging fibrosis in a head-to-head manner, and identify
The prevalence of BE in Korean patients presenting for a routine health check-up was 0.84%, lower than reported in Western countries. Among the subjects with BE 77.7% did not have endoscopic erosions and there were no reflux symptoms in 39.9%. These results suggest that regular endoscopic screening with a high index of suspicion is necessary for the diagnosis of BE.
BACKGROUND AND AIM: The aims of this study were to investigate whether acid suppressive therapy increases the risk of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) and to define factors associated with mortality in cirrhotic patients with SBP. METHODS: Cirrhotic patients who had undergone paracentesis after hospitalization were included. Those patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of SBP. Factors associated with the development of SBP were analyzed. Mortality rates
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of psychosocial problems and their associations with rotating shift work in the development of functional gastrointestinal disorders. METHODS: In this cross-sectional observation study, survey was administered to nurses and nurse assistants in a referral hospital. In addi-tion to demographic questions, subjects were asked to complete the Rome III Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Rome III Psychosocial Alarm Questi
Anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae Mannan antibody may be associated with Crohn's disease and Behçet's disease and perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody with ulcerative colitis. A combination of both tests may aid the differential diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease.
AIMS: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a global health problem associated with an increased risk of diabetes mellitus (DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer. Body composition parameters, including obesity, visceral adiposity, and sarcopenia contribute to the development of MS and CVD. Previous studies have investigated the association of individual body composition parameters with MS. Studies analyzing the association between multiple body composition parameters and MS have been rare. We aimed
Fib-4 and Lok index were useful noninvasive fibrosis indices for predicting advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis in Asian patients with hepatitis C. In addition, ARFI elastography exhibited acceptable diagnostic performance in the assessment of hepatic fibrosis in patients with hepatitis C.
