Clinicopathologic characteristics and treatment outcomes of hepatoid adenocarcinoma of the stomach, a rare but unique subtype of gastric cancer
Sun Kyung Baek, Sae‐Won Han, Do‐Youn Oh, Seock‐Ah Im, Tae‐You Kim, Yung‐Jue Bang
SJR Q2BMC GastroenterologyOA

BACKGROUND: Gastric hepatoid adenocarcinoma (HAC) is a special type of gastric cancer that morphologically mimics hepatocellular carcinoma. In this study, we performed an evaluation of clinicopathologic characteristics, treatment outcome, and prognosis in patients with gastric HAC. METHODS: We consecutively enrolled patients with pathologically proven gastric HAC at Seoul National University Hospital between January 1996 and December 2008 and conducted a retrospective review. Among 15,253 patien

Earlier attainment of DNR permission was associated with reduced use of medical intervention. Thus, physicians should discuss death with terminal cancer patients at the earliest practical time to prevent unnecessary and uncomfortable procedures and reduce health care costs.

Increased ERCC Expression Correlates with Improved Outcome of Patients Treated with Cisplatin as an Adjuvant Therapy for Curatively Resected Gastric Cancer
Sun Kyung Baek, Si-Young Kim, Jae Jin Lee, Yoon Wha Kim, Hwi Joong Yoon, Kyung Sam Cho
SJR Q1Cancer Research and TreatmentOA

PURPOSE: It has been reported that the overexpression of the excision repair cross-complementing 1 (ERCC1) gene, which is essential for the repair of cisplatin (CDDP)-DNA adducts, negatively influences the effectiveness of CDDP-based therapy for primary gastric cancer. We investigated whether the ERCC1 expression was associated with survival for gastric cancer patients in an adjuvant setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 44 patients who were diagnosed with stage II or highe

The prevalence of BTcP was 29% in patients admitted with controlled BCP. Although the patients had well-controlled BCP, BTcP showed association with a lower quality of life in patients with cancer. More medical attention is needed for detection and management of BTcP.

SJR Q2The Korean Journal of Internal MedicineOA

Old patients with CRC show different histology from younger patients. They are more frequently to have colon as primary lesion. They undergo less adjuvant therapy. Further studies and evidence-based guidelines for older patients with CRC are warranted to improve their outcome.

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

PURPOSE: Evaluation of symptoms and signs for the management of neuropathic cancer pain (NCP) is challenging. This study aimed to identify clinical predictors of NCP and symptoms and signs most relevant of those in Korean patients. METHODS: This nationwide, descriptive, cross-sectional, multicenter, observational study included 2,003 cancer patients aged ≥20 years who reported a visual analog scale (VAS) score ≥1 for pain and provided informed consent for participation. The Douleur Neuropathic (

PURPOSE: Six forms relating to decisions on life-sustaining treatment (LST) for patients at the end-of-life (EOL) in hospital are required by the "Act on Decision of LST for Patients at the EOL." We investigated the preparation and creation status of these documents from the database of the National Agency for Management of LST. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed the contents and details of each document necessary for decisions on LST, and the creation status of forms. We defined patients comple

Evaluating the recent developments in palliative chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer
Sun Kyung Baek, Kyu Taek Lee, Sang Byung Bae, Sang‐Cheol Lee
SJR Q2The Korean Journal of Internal MedicineOA

The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) has increased. CRC is the third most common cancer and the fourth most common cause of cancer-related deaths in Korea. Palliative chemotherapy can be used to shrink tumors and ease symptoms caused by the cancer when cure is not possible. It is important to identify chemotherapeutic agents that can be used to effectively treat metastatic CRC (mCRC) and thus improve the survival and quality of life of patients with mCRC. This review aimed to evaluate the re

Lenvatinib-Induced Acute Pancreatitis in a Patient with Metastatic Thyroid Cancer: A Case Report

Physicians should consider acute pancreatitis as a differential diagnosis for patients complaining of abdominal pain while on lenvatinib, regardless of hyperamylasemia or hyperlipasemia. Systematic collection of data on acute pancreatitis development during lenvatinib treatment should be considered, and further research is warranted to identify the mechanism of acute pancreatitis associated with multi-target tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as lenvatinib.

PURPOSE: Efficacy, safety, and quality of life (QoL) for patients receiving larger doses of controlled-release oxycodone (CR oxycodone) in outpatient clinics are evaluated. METHODS: The use of high-dose CR oxycodone and adjuvant drugs for pain management, pain intensity, parameters associated with quality of life, and adverse effects in cancer patients treated with high-dose CR oxycodone (≥80 mg/day) was prospectively observed for 8 weeks. Background: Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is one of the most important issues associated with chemotherapy. The additional or synergistic effect of acupuncture on CINV remains controversial. Methods: Patients were randomized into either the group that received standard antiemetics with acupuncture (Arm A) or standard antiemetics only (Arm C). Acupuncture with manual stimulation was applied at eight predefined points and was started before the first cycle of chemotherapy on the

SJR Q3Laboratory MedicineOA

As polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is increasingly applied in clinical medicine, early detection and more accurate diagnosis is possible. Using molecular methods with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples in addition to existing cytological methods is of value even if only occult malignant cells are present. We describe a case of central nervous system (CNS) leukemia in a patient with Philadelphia chromosome–positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia confirmed by reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) in a C

BACKGRUOUND: Adrenocortical carcinomas (ACCs) are rare tumors with aggressive but varied prognosis. Stage, Grade, Resection status, Age, Symptoms (S-GRAS) score, based on clinical and pathological factors, was found to best stratify the prognosis of European ACC patients. This study assessed the prognostic performance of modified S-GRAS (mS-GRAS) scores including modified grade (mG) by integrating mitotic counts into the Ki67 index (original grade), in Korean ACC patients. METHODS: Patients who
