Impact of Surface Hydrophilicity on Electrochemical Water Splitting
Byung‐Keun Kim, Myung Jun Kim, Jae Jeong Kim
SJR Q1ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces

The activity of electrocatalysts can be improved by modifying their electronic structures and surface morphologies. In electrochemical reactions with gas evolution, the performance of an electrocatalyst is also affected by how easily gas bubbles depart from an electrocatalyst surface. However, it is difficult to quantitatively estimate the improvement in the performance that can be achieved by promoting the departure of gas bubbles from the electrocatalyst surface. This study investigated the ef

BACKGROUND: Microbes in the airway have been shown to be associated with the pathogenesis of asthma. The upper airway microbiome influences the dysbiosis of the lower airway microbiome. However, to date, the influence of upper airway microbiome for adult and elderly asthma has not been fully elucidated. Here, the metagenome of upper airway microbiome of young adults and elderly was analyzed to identify their association with adult asthma. METHODS: Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from young a

The national prevalence of atopic dermatitis, and asthma did not show noticeable increase any more in Korea. However, the prevalence of allergic rhinitis still on the rise until recently, especially in the age group under 10. This is the first report in Asia suggesting a slowdown of the incidence of allergic diseases.

Severe asthma (SA) presents in about 3%-5% of adult asthmatics and is responsible for over 60% of asthma-related medical expenses, posing a heavy socioeconomic burden. However, to date, a precise definition of or clear diagnostic criteria for SA have not been established, and therefore, it has been challenging for clinicians to diagnose and treat this disease. Currently, novel biologics targeting several molecules, such as immunoglobulin E, interleukin (IL)5, and IL4/IL13, have emerged, and many

Most of temporal arteritis occurs in the older patient over 50 years old, and the histopathologic finding shows a granulomatous inflammation, so this called giant cell arteritis. However, the young patients also present with a nodular lesion in their temple, and juvenile temporal arteritis (JTA) should be considered as one of the differential diagnosis, although it is very rare. For both diagnosis and treatment of JTA, excisional biopsy is essential. The pathologic finding of the temporal artery

Allergy Asthma & Respiratory DiseaseOA

Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are characterized by chronic airway inflammation resulting in airflow limitation. They include various phenotypes and endotypes in their disease entities. For that reason, they lack proper biomarkers and epoch-making progresses in treatment nowadays. Healthy airway has been believed to be sterile traditionally. However, with the help of nonculture sequencing techniques, researchers discovered that it is full of the commensal and symbiotic m

Different Biological Pathways Between Good and Poor Inhaled Corticosteroid Responses in Asthma
Byung‐Keun Kim, Hyun Seung Lee, Suh‐Young Lee, Heung‐Woo Park
SJR Q1Frontiers in MedicineOA

Gene regulatory networks address how transcription factors (TFs) and their regulatory roles in gene expression determine the responsiveness to anti-asthma therapy. The purpose of this study was to assess gene regulatory networks of adult patients with asthma who showed good or poor lung function improvements in response to inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs). A total of 47 patients with asthma were recruited and classified as good responders (GRs) and poor responders (PRs) based on their responses to

INTRODUCTION: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been linked to allergic diseases but their effects on sensitisation to allergens in individuals with asthma are unknown. We aimed to identify miRNAs associated with house dust mite (HDM) sensitisation in childhood asthma. METHODS: Serum samples from 1126 children with asthma who participated in the Genetics of Asthma in Costa Rica Study (GACRS) were profiled for 304 miRNAs. We first divided according to HDM sensitisation and then tested whether miRNAs were d
