15Diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic disorder. Among various complications, diabetic neuropathy and peripheral vascular disorders are closely associated with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). Lower extremity ulcers and amputations are ongoing problems among individuals with diabetes. There are several classification systems for DFUs; however, no prognostic system has to date been accepted as the gold standard or the optimum prediction tool for amputations. A retrospective study was designed. Demog
The extended latissimus dorsi flap has been widely used for breast reconstruction. However, seroma at the donor site is a common complication and makes it difficult for reconstructive surgeons to choose it as a primary option. We analyzed the association between seroma and reconstructions with extended latissimus dorsi flaps. A series of 120 consecutive cases were included in this study. The average body mass index (BMI) was 22.1 kg/m, and the mean ratio of the flap weight to the extirpated brea
This cohort study found that use of textured implants in reconstruction appears to be associated with recurrence of breast cancer. Further investigation is required to verify these results.
BACKGROUND: Several investigators have postulated that human adipose-derived stem cells can be used for skin rejuvenation, but there have been few reports about their direct effects on human epidermal melanocytes. The authors studied the effects on melanocytes, and the causative agent of those effects was further investigated in this study. METHODS: Human epidermal melanocytes were divided into three groups and cultured in adipose-derived stem cell-conditioned medium, human dermal fibroblast-con
BACKGROUND: A closed-suction drain is usually inserted during tissue expander-based breast reconstruction. Prolonged duration of drain retention can disturb patients' daily lives and affect overall sociomedical costs. This study aimed to investigate factors that may influence the drainage and to identify predictors of unusually prolonged drain duration. METHODS: Patients who underwent delayed-immediate, two-stage breast reconstruction using a tissue expander between January of 2013 and July of 2
BACKGROUND: Despite the decrease in donor-site morbidity with the advent of deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstruction, abdominal complications still occur. There have been few studies on donor morbidity considering the ethnic differences in the Asian population, as represented by a lower BMI with less redundant tissue and a tendency for poor scarring. In the present study, the authors investigated the incidence of abdominal complications and their risk factors
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to identify comprehensive hand injury patterns in different pediatric age groups and to assess their risk factors. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted among patients younger than 16-year-old who presented to the emergency room of a general hospital located in Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea, and were treated for an injury of the finger or hand from January 2010 to December 2014. The authors analyzed the medical records of 344 patients. Age was
The use of ADM and initial inflation ratio do not influence days to drain removal or seroma formation. A longer period of drain placement is expected when a larger expander is used or in elderly patients.
A matched cohort analysis demonstrated that ADM usage is not associated with an increased risk of complications, including skin flap complications, seroma, and infection. Our result suggests that ADM can be safely used in immediate expander-implant breast reconstruction when necessary.
Dorsal veins in the lateral nail fold can be found easily because of the constant anatomical location. The new incision on the lateral nail fold provides not only sufficient operative field for anastomosis but also additional opportunity of successful venous anastomosis in the selected cases. The authors, therefore, propose this technique as an effective method for an alternative venous anastomosis in the zone I replantation.
