15BACKGROUND: Although robotic-assisted gait training (RAGT) is becoming a standard method in stroke rehabilitation, its effect on chronic stroke patients is uncertain. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) enhances the effect of RAGT on functional ambulation in chronic stroke patients. METHODS: Chronic hemiplegic stroke patients with a Functional Ambulatory Category (FAC) score≤4 were randomly assigned to either the RAGT with anod
The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of the chin-tuck maneuver on the movements of swallowing-related structures in healthy subjects and formulate standard instructions for the maneuver. A total of 40 healthy volunteers (20 men and 20 women) swallowed 10 mL of diluted barium solution in a "normal and comfortable" position (NEUT), a comfortable chin-down position (DOWN), and a strict chin-tuck position (TUCK). Resting state anatomy and kinematic changes were analyzed and comp
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The aim of this study was to quantitatively investigate spatiotemporal movement abnormalities during the pharyngeal phase of swallowing in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) and to investigate relationships between disease and dysphagia severities. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: We performed two-dimensional motion analysis of the hyoid bone, epiglottis, and vocal folds using videofluoroscopic images from 33 PD patients and 33 age-matched, healthy contro
Effortful swallowing (EFS) is a common compensatory swallowing manoeuver for dysphagia patients. We investigated the influence of EFS on temporal and spatial characteristics of the movements of the hyoid bone, larynx and epiglottis in healthy subjects. A total of 41 volunteers swallowed 10 mL of diluted barium solution using two swallowing strategies: usual and effortful swallowing (USS and EFS). The motions of the hyoid bone, larynx and epiglottis were tracked using frame-by-frame kinematic mot
To determine whether multiple sessions of electrical stimulation (ES) applied to neck muscles improve swallowing function and whether this improvement is accompanied by cortical reorganization in patients with dysphagia, before-after trials were performed on eight subjects. ES was applied for 1 hour, 5 days a week for 2 weeks. Swallowing function significantly improved after 2 weeks of ES, and this change was found to correlate with cortical reorganization measured by corticobulbar output maps.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI), a global public health concern, may lead to death and major disability. While various short-term, small-sample, and cross-sectional studies on TBI have been conducted in South Korea, there is a lack of clarity on the nationwide longitudinal TBI trends in the country. This retrospective study investigated the epidemiological TBI trends in South Korea, using a population-based dataset of the National Health Insurance (2008-2017). The crude and age adjusted TBI inciden
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the proportion of aspiration pneumonia cases among patients with community-acquired pneumonia in Korea. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with community-acquired pneumonia who had been admitted to the emergency department of a university-affiliated tertiary hospital in Gyeonggi Province, Korea between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016. Among these patients, those with aspiration pneumonia were identified using ICD-10 codes (J69.*). Patients with re
Acquiring gait parameters from usual walking is important to predict clinical outcomes including life expectancy, risk of fall, and neurocognitive performance in older people. We developed a novel gait analysis tool that is small, less-intrusive and is based on two-dimensional light detection and ranging (2D-LiDAR) technology. Using an object-tracking algorithm, we conducted a validation study of the spatiotemporal tracking of ankle locations of young, healthy participants (n = 4) by comparing o
(1) Background: White matter changes among individuals with mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI) may be sensitive imaging markers reflecting functional impairment, particularly in the context of post-concussion syndrome. The objective of this study was to examine the altered white matter integrity in mild-to-moderate TBI patients compared with age-matched normal controls. (2) Methods: Diffusion tensor imaging data from 15 individuals with TBI and 15 control subjects were retrospectively
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the inter-rater agreement for the clinical dysphagia scale (CDS). METHOD: Sixty-seven subjects scheduled to participate in a video-fluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) were pre-examined by two raters independently within a 24-hour interval. Each item and the total score were compared between the raters. In addition, we investigated whether subtraction of items showing low agreement or modification of rating methods could enhance inter-rater agreement without significant
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the activities of the submental muscles using surface electromyography (sEMG) in patients presenting with dysphagia secondary to middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction, and to compare the results with those in healthy volunteers. DESIGN: Retrospective study design. SETTING: A dysphagia clinic at a tertiary care university hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-one patients presenting with dysphagia after unilateral MCA infarction were recruited into the study within 2 months of s
