15Although further data analysis is necessary to improve their accuracy, convolutional neural networks would be helpful to detect acral melanoma from dermoscopy images of the hands and feet.
With the recognition of dermoscopy as a new medical technology and its available fee assessment in Korea comes an increased interest in imaging-based dermatological diagnosis. For the dermatologist, who treats benign tumors and malignant skin cancers, imaging-based evaluations can assist with determining the surgical method and future follow-up plans. The identification of the tumor's location and the existence of blood vessels can guide safe treatment and enable the use of minimal incisions. Th
BACKGROUND: Several studies have achieved high-level performance of melanoma detection using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, few have described the extent to which the implementation of CNNs improves the diagnostic performance of the physicians. OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed at developing a CNN for detecting acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) and investigating whether its implementation can improve the initial decision for ALM detection made by the physicians. METHODS: A CNN was tr
BACKGROUND: Malassezia yeasts are normal flora of the skin found in 75~98% of healthy subjects. The accurate identification of the Malassezia species is important for determining the pathogenesis of the Malassezia yeasts with regard to various skin diseases such as Malassezia folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis. OBJECTIVE: This research was conducted to determine a more accurate and rapid molecular test for the identification and classification of Malassezia yeasts. METHOD
BACKGROUND: Fractional photothermolysis makes thousands of minute areas called microthermal treatment zones on the skin surface and transmits thermal injury to facilitate heat shock protein formation around the dermis. Potential side effects include acneiform eruption, herpes simplex virus outbreak, erythema, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. OBJECTIVE: To investigate and compare the changes in the skin of Asian patients after two different fractional photothermolysis systems (FPS) on a s
These results show that, despite the drawback of rather prolonged healing time, NPWT is an excellent therapeutic option for wounds after wide excision of melanoma on the foot, with acceptable functional and cosmetic outcomes.
BACKGROUND: Surgical excision is generally recommended for the treatment of nodular fasciitis (NF) to rule out sarcoma. However, in cases of NF occurring on the face, the reported recurrence rate is higher and the surgical approach may result in considerable aesthetic concern. OBJECTIVE: To describe our experience with NF occurring on the face and evaluate the outcomes of surgical and nonsurgical methods of treatment. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 16 patients with NF on the fac
BACKGROUND: This case-control study concerns a molecular biological method based on the data gathered from a group of Korean subjects to examine the distribution of Malassezia yeasts in seborrheic dermatitis (SD) patients. Cultures for Malassezia yeasts were taken from the foreheads, cheeks and chests of 60 patients with SD and in 60 healthy controls of equivalent age. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between certain species of Malassezia and SD. This was done
From the results of sequential changes of skin defects, SIH can be recommended as an alternative treatment method for restoration with more careful dressing for initial two weeks.
Our treatment process can reduce the risk of incomplete resection and improve cosmetic outcomes in patients with SUM.
Skin cancer, previously known to be a common disease in Western countries, is becoming more common in Asian countries. Skin cancer differs from other carcinomas in that it is visible to our eyes. Although skin biopsy is essential for the diagnosis of skin cancer, decisions regarding whether or not to conduct a biopsy are made by an experienced dermatologist. From this perspective, it is easy to obtain and store photos using a smartphone, and artificial intelligence technologies developed to anal
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Precise determination of cancer margin during skin cancer surgery is crucial for complete resection and further clinical prognosis. Although reflection confocal microscopy (RCM) has been used for perioperative guiding, its reflection contrast has limitations in detecting cancer cells in the dermis. We previously developed combined reflection confocal (RC) and moxifloxacin-based two-photon (MB-TP) microscopy for sensitive cancer detection by using multiple contrast mech
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although multiphoton microscopy (MPM) can visualize both cell and extracellular matrix (ECM) structures of the skin in high-contrast without exogenous labeling, label-free MPM is usually too slow to image clinically relevant large regions. A high-speed MPM method would be beneficial for evaluating clinical skin specimens by increasing the imaging area. In this study, moxifloxacin labeling-based MPM (moxifloxacin MPM) was characterized in various human skin cancer speci
BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported the presence of hypopigmentation in extramammary Paget disease (EMPD). However, an in-depth analysis regarding its clinical implication is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical characteristics of EMPD in the Korean population and to determine the implication of hypopigmentation on clinical outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 124 cases of EMPD who underwent surgical treatment from a single tertiary hospital from December 2005 to March 20
