15Abstract In this paper, we examine the impact of managerial characteristics and consumer proximity on corporate environmental performance (CEP). By analyzing the interaction effects between managerial and organizational factors on the firm's environmental performance, we go beyond the extant literature that has primarily focused on the linkage between CEP and financial performance. Drawing mainly from the upper echelons perspective and institutional theory, we examine the impact of managerial ch
For most forms of conscious consumer choice, product attributes serve as the means that consumers use to accomplish their goals. Because there is competition between products in the marketplace, consumption decisions typically present conflict between means to achieve a goal. In this article, we examine the consequences of conflict between regulatory means on consumers’ decisions and show that its resolution depends on whether the means—that is, the attributes—are compatible with the consumer’s
Purpose Building on upper echelons theory, the authors advance the literature on the influence of diversity on innovation by studying the link between top management team (TMT) gender diversity and innovation performance and the link's boundary conditions. Design/methodology/approach The authors analyze survey data from 390 manufacturing establishments in Germany and India through an ordinary least square (OLS) regression analysis. Findings TMT gender diversity is positively related to innovatio
Purpose This study investigates how a firm's regulatory focus (i.e. promotion and prevention foci) affects growth- and efficiency-oriented strategic change, highlighting the role of organizational-level regulatory focus as a cognitive frame within which to interpret performance feedback and its subsequent effects on strategic decisions. Design/methodology/approach The authors collected longitudinal data on 98 S&P 500 manufacturing firms for a seven-year period. The panel data, which includes
Webrooming is a two-stage shopping process that begins with examining product options online followed by making a purchase at an offline store. In four experiments, we investigate webrooming effects on product evaluation and purchase intentions. The results suggest that webrooming (vs. non-webrooming) has negative impacts on (1) perceived product performance vis-à-vis expectations and (2) purchase intentions for the products offline. Our moderated-mediation analyses show that webrooming leads to
It is self-evident that performing poorly on a task makes people dissatisfied relative to performing well. How can this negative affect be overcome? We provide an adaptive strategy for dealing with poor performance. Experiment 1 shows that poor performers tend to recruit the highest potential performance as a comparison standard and hence are dissatisfied. However, if they are reminded that they set their own low goals, and that these goals were met, they are as satisfied as better performers. E
The capacitance characteristics of platinum nanoparticle (NP)-embedded metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) capacitors with gate Al2O3 layers are studied in this work. The capacitance versus voltage (C–V) curves obtained for a representative MOS capacitor exhibit flat-band voltage shifts, demonstrating the presence of charge storages in the platinum NPs. The counterclockwise hysteresis and flat-band voltage shift, observed from the C–V curves imply that electrons are stored in a floating gate layer c
This paper examines how people anticipate negative emotions when faced with an uncertain outcome and try to manage their expectations. While extant research streams remain equivocal on whether managing expectations always succeeds, this research examines situations in which setting a low expectation can have an adverse emotional impact and suggests ways to alleviate this negative consequence. Using goal setting and a false-feedback paradigm, we show that, although individuals who set low goals t
In this study, we fabricate a high efficiency heater consisting of the indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticle (NP)-paste and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and investigate the effect of PDMS on temperature maintenance of the heater through the comparison with the PDMS-free ITO film heater. Compared to the ITO film heater, the temperature of the PDMS/ITO film heater lasts 1.5 times longer. And the power consumption of the PDMS/ITO film heater is reduced by 35%, owing to the low thermal conductivity of
Stakeholders often evaluate firms with strong reputations more favorably. However, a growing stream of research also suggests that a high reputation may lead to negative evaluations. We attempt to reconcile these contrasting viewpoints in the context of corporate environmental sustainability. Assuming that stakeholders use organizational reputation as their interpretive lens, we examine how the stock market evaluates firms with varying levels of environmental performance. Analyzing 667 public di
In this study, we fabricated the HgSe nanoparticle-based thin film transistors (TFTs) of back gate structure with PVA gate dielectric. The fabricated TFTs show the improved electrical characteristics in the mobility of 16 cm2/Vs and the on/off ratio of 104 after annealing process at 100 oC for 5 min. AFM images demonstrate that the decrease in surface roughness according to annealing process leads to the improvement of electrical characteristics. The change in drain current caused from the condi
In this study, we investigate the effect of the deposition pressure on the electrical properties of nitrogen-doped amorphous carbon (a-C:N) films deposited by using an unbalanced DC magnetron sputtering method. As the deposition pressure is decreased from 9 to 1 mTorr, the resistivity decreases from 7.88 to 2.68 × 10−2 ·cm while the deposition rate increases from 3.5 to 4.4 nm/min. The decrease in resistivity is caused by increases in both the carrier concentration and mobility. As the pressure
Structural and optoelectronic properties of as-synthesized SnO2 nanowires were examined in this study. The SnO2 nanowires were first synthesized by thermal evaporation of ball-milled SnO2 powders in argon atmosphere without the presence of any catalysts, and their structural properties are then investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. This investigation revealed that the synthesized SnO2 nanowires are single-crystall
