OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the incidence rate and relative risk of tuberculosis (TB) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and in patients with RA treated with tumor-necrosis-factor (TNF) blockers in Korea. METHODS: Using data from the Korean National Tuberculosis Association (KNTA) as a control and data from a single-center cohort of patients with RA, we conducted an evaluation of 1285 patients with RA not exposed to TNF blockers and reviewed medical records of 90 and 103 patients with RA tre

Progress in defining clinically meaningful changes for clinical trials in nonrenal manifestations of SLE disease activity

SJR Q1Arthritis Research & TherapyOA

Since the 2002 Dusseldorf meeting, one new agent, Benlysta, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for systemic lupus erythematosus. Experiences from the field in conducting trials of all the agents tested during this period have provided valuable practical insights. There has been incremental progress in defining the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of key disease manifestations and the view is largely that of the health care providers and not that of the person

OBJECTIVE: To perform a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in Koreans in order to identify susceptibility loci for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: We generated high-quality genotypes for 441,398 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 801 RA cases and 757 controls. We then tested 79 markers from 46 loci for replication in an independent sample of 718 RA cases and 719 controls. RESULTS: Genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10(-08) ) was attained by markers from the major histocompatibility c

Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody-Associated Vasculitis in Korea: A Narrative Review

SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) is a group of systemic necrotising vasculitides, which often involve small vessels, and which lead to few or no immune deposits in affected organs. According to clinical manifestations and pathological features, AAV is classified into three variants: microscopic polyangiitis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), and eosinophilic GPA. The American College of Rheumatology 1990 criteria contributed to the classification of AAV, alth

The −169C/T polymorphism in FCRL3 is not associated with susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus in a case–control study of Koreans

Arthritis & RheumatismOA

OBJECTIVE: In Japanese individuals, the -169C/T single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in FCRL3 has been reported to be associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and autoimmune thyroid diseases. The objective of this study was to test the association of this SNP with RA and SLE, in a case-control study of Korean individuals. METHODS: The -169C/T SNP in FCRL3 was genotyped in 1,060 patients with RA, 457 patients with SLE, and 697 unaffected control subjects, usi

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between HLA-DRB1 alleles and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) susceptibility and features of SLE, such as clinical manifestations and autoantibody profiles, in a Korean population. METHODS: We tested the genetic associations between HLA-DRB1 alleles and SLE susceptibility and clinical subphenotypes in 1,089 patients with SLE and 2,161 control subjects, including a discovery set (475 patients and 1,119 controls) and a replication set (614 patients and 1

Objective Several clinical trials aimed at treating various autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), by introducing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been conducted. However, with refractory lupus nephritis (LN), the outcomes of MSC transplantation are not well known, and further validation is required. In particular, data concerning the safety and efficacy of LN treatment using bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs) are still lacking. Methods We identified characteristics

Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis: Experiences in Korean Patients
Chan‐Bum Choi, Yong‐Beom Park, Sang‐Won Lee
SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is one form of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis. Identical to what has been called Churg-Strauss syndrome, EGPA exhibits both allergic and vasculitis features. EGPA was first described as a syndrome consisting of asthma, fever, eosinophilia, and organ involvement including heart failure, neuropathy, and kidney damage, by Churg and Strauss in 1951. We aimed to evaluate the safety and clinical responses in Korean ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients after three months of etanercept therapy. AS patients satisfying the Modified New York Criteria were enrolled. They were assessed for safety and clinical responses at enrollment and after three months of etanercept therapy. A total of 124 patients completed the study. After three months, the rate of ASsessment in AS International Working Group 20% improvement (ASAS 20) response was 79.8%. The ra
