Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is a serious infectious complication in immunocompromised patients. Recent reports indicate its favorable clinical outcomes by early diagnosis with chest computed tomography scan. We retrospectively analyzed our experiences with histopathological evaluation by open lung biopsy in 31 patients (32 cases) with hematologic malignancies, suspected of having invasive pulmonary aspergillosis clinically and radiologically. Although the initial computed tomography finding
In order to investigate the differential effects of ascorbate derivatives on leukemic cell growth, we examined their stabilities and transmembrane transport efficiencies. The growth of HL-60 and U937 cells was dose-dependently inhibited by ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbate, but not by dehydroascorbic acid and magnesium ascorbyl 2-phosphate up to 200 microM. The growth-suppression by ascorbic acid was dependent on its redox state, showing a complete or partial reversion by ascorbate oxidase or F
When formulating strategic problems, managers and executives routinely overlook relevant causes. This oversight, in turn, compromises the effectiveness of solutions and strategies. To illuminate the factors determining the success of problem formulation, we develop a model of the individual-level drivers of problem formulation comprehensiveness—the number of nonredundant and relevant causes to a problem that individuals identify. Specifically, we theorize that epistemic motivation—the desire to
Abstract Research Summary Novel formulations of strategic problems are key to innovation and exploration. Conventional wisdom suggests that intuitive thinking, rather than rational‐analytic thinking, facilitates novel problem formulations. This article proposes that intuitive thinking is insufficient and that novel formulations instead depend on sequencing rational‐analytic and intuitive thinking across two phases of the problem formulation task. Two experiments using samples of strategists in o
Effective strategy development, evaluation, and implementation starts with a comprehensive understanding of strategic problems. However, developing such an understanding is often challenging due to the complexity of such problems and because how they can be solved is not yet known. Managers often oversimplify these problems by focusing on a few symptoms and obvious causes. Research indicates that big picture, abstract thinking helps managers explore underlying causes more flexibly, but it can al
