15Recent investigations suggest genetic susceptibility of allopurinol-induced severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs). However, the strength of association was variable according to phenotypes and ethnic backgrounds. To explore genetic markers for allopurinol-induced SCARs in Koreans, we genotyped human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I alleles of 25 cases of allopurinol-induced SCARs (20 cases of drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome and five cases of Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal ne
Nephrotoxicity is the most common and clinically significant adverse effect of calcineurin inhibitors. Cyclosporine and tacrolimus nephrotoxicity is manifested by both acute azotemia and chronic progressive renal disease and tubular zdysfunction. An elevation in the plasma potassium concentration due to reduced efficiency of urinary potassium excretion is common in cyclosporine-treated patients; it may be severe and potentially life-threatening with concurrent administration of an angiotensin co
Our findings suggest that the interaction between a high salt diet and elevated TGs may exert synergistic biological effects on the risk of hypertension.
Spontaneous pneumothorax is a rare manifestation of metastatic lung cancers and described in advanced diseases or during cytotoxic chemotherapy which is manifested by sudden onset of dyspnea. The cause or mechanism of spontaneous pneumothorax has been unknown, as well as the association with site of metastases or type of cancers or side effect of chemotherapeutic drugs has been reported rarely. A 68-yr-old man underwent excision of angiosarcoma of the scalp. Chest radiography did not show any ev
Hypoalbuminemia is associated with vascular endothelial dysfunction and the development of chronic cardiovascular diseases. However, the relationship between serum albumin concentration and blood pressure changes remains controversial. Community-based longitudinal cohort data collected from Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study were used in this study. Hypoalbuminemia was defined as a serum albumin concentration of ≤ 4.0 g/dL. A total of 4325 participants were categorized into control (n = 3157)
Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is an important diagnostic indicator of diabetes mellitus, and some authors have argued that it is related to impaired lung function in the diabetic population. However, there was rare study for association between lung function and HbA1c in the non-diabetic population. We investigated whether HbA1c below the diagnostic threshold is related to deficits in lung function. We analyzed biochemical and spirometry data from a nation-wide, population-based, case-control stud
Abstract The association of inadequate dietary sodium intake with bone mineral density (BMD) and the risk of osteoporosis is controversial. To find the association between low sodium diet and the risk of incipient osteoporosis, we performed a population-based cross-sectional analysis using Tanaka method for estimation 24-h urinary sodium excretion (e24hUNaE Tanaka ) as a candidate indicator of sodium intake. We identified 3869 participants without osteoporosis and classified them into quartiles
Increased glycemic exposure, even below the diagnostic criteria for diabetes mellitus, is crucial in the pathogenesis of diabetic microvascular complications represented by microalbuminuria. Nonetheless, there is limited evidence regarding which single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with prediabetes and whether genetic predisposition to prediabetes is related to microalbuminuria, especially in the general population. Our objective was to answer these questions. We conducted a gen
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The increased permeability of chloride in the distal cortical nephron in cyclosporine nephrotoxicity may involve the transcellular pathway mediated by the thiazide-sensitive Na(+)-Cl⁻ cotransporter and/or the paracellular pathway mediated by the tight junctions (TJs). METHODS: Cyclosporine was subcutaneously administered to Sprague-Dawley rats for 6 (7.5 mg/kg body weight) and 2 (25 mg/kg body weight) weeks, and immunoblot analysis and immunohistochemistry were carried out from
Central obesity and related metabolic components are important risks for microalbuminuria. To describe the effects of interactions between central obesity and related metabolic components on microalbuminuria, we conducted a nation-wide, population-based interaction analysis using cardio-metabolic index (CMI) as a candidate indicator of central obesity and related abnormal lipid metabolism. We recruited native Koreans aged 20 years or older with no medical illness. A total of 5398 participants we

Ferritin is considered to be a marker of the body's iron stores and has a potential relationship with the systemic manifestations of inflammatory reactions. Data on the association between increased levels of serum ferritin and ocular problems are limited, particularly in relation to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Serum ferritin levels, as a possible clinical parameter for predicting AMD, were analyzed in anthropometric, biochemical, and ophthalmologic data from a nation-wide, populatio
The physiological status of phytoplankton, used to determine the quantity and quality of basic food sources in marine ecosystems, can change rapidly due to ambient environmental conditions (e.g., light, temperature, and nutrients). To understand the physiological characteristics of phytoplankton, the phytoplankton community composition, pigment concentration, primary production, and pigment production rate were estimated at 100% and 1% light depths in the Philippine Sea during the summer of 2019
Background: Hypertension is the leading factor of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Although antihypertensive medical treatment is the cornerstone of blood pressure control, lifestyle modification, including optimal diet therapy, such as dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH), cannot be overemphasized.Current Concepts: Due to the mismatch between sodium intake and excretion process being the key mechanisms according to physiologic principles, low sodium and high potassium intakes a
