SJR Q1European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic SurgeryOA

OBJECTIVES: Thoracoscopic lobectomy has been widely performed on patients with early-stage lung cancer; meanwhile indications of thoracoscopic segmentectomy have not been clearly defined due to technical difficulties and unclear oncological outcomes. The aim of this study was to compare early and late outcomes between thoracoscopic segmentectomy and thoracoscopic lobectomy. METHODS: Between January 2005 and December 2013, 100 thoracoscopic segmentectomies and 1049 thoracoscopic lobectomies were

SJR Q1European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic SurgeryOA

Postoperative psychological distress and, in particular, depression increased after surgical treatment for lung cancer. Postoperative anxiety and depression were aggravated by residual symptoms after surgery. Careful psychological evaluation and appropriate management are required to improve patients' quality of life after lung cancer surgery.

Early clinical outcomes of robot-assisted surgery for anterior mediastinal mass: its superiority over a conventional sternotomy approach evaluated by propensity score matching†

SJR Q1European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic SurgeryOA

In carefully selected patients with relatively smaller sized masses, robot-assisted surgery resulted in excellent early clinical outcomes with lesser tube drainage, lower blood loss, shorter tube days and length of hospital stay without any postoperative complications, compared with the matched open group. Further investigation for long-term clinical outcomes and oncological outcomes is required for a robotic approach. Particularly, long-term follow-up for the local recurrence rate according to

Video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy in non-small-cell lung cancer patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is associated with lower pulmonary complications than open lobectomy: a propensity score-matched analysis
Jae Hyun Jeon, Chang Hyun Kang, H.-S. Kim, Yong Won Seong, In Kyu Park, Young Tae Kim, Jung H. Kim
SJR Q1European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic SurgeryOA

OBJECTIVES: Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at an increased risk of pulmonary complications after pulmonary resection. This study aimed to identify whether video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) lobectomy can reduce postoperative pulmonary complications compared with lobectomy by thoracotomy in NSCLC patients with COPD. METHODS: Among a total of 1502 NSCLC patients who underwent lobectomy from April 2005 to June 2012 at the Seoul Nat

Lymphadenectomy extent is closely related to long-term survival in esophageal cancer☆

SJR Q1European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery

OBJECTIVE: The optimal extent of lymphadenectomy during esophagectomy for esophageal cancer remains debatable. The aim of this study was to identify the effect of the extent of lymphadenectomy on survival and recurrence after esophagectomy in esophageal cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred thirty-three patients who were operated on between January 1995 and December 2003 due to esophageal cancer were included. The study subjects were stage I, II, and III esophageal squamous cell carcinoma p

SJR Q1European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery

OBJECTIVES: The inaccuracy of conventional CT makes open thoracotomy and manual palpation inevitable in pulmonary metastasectomy. However, the introduction of multi-detector row CT technology made it possible to detect pulmonary nodules with a diameter of 1mm. The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy of 1mm thin-section 16-channel multi-detector row CT (TSMDCT) in the detection of metastatic pulmonary nodules. METHODS: Twenty-seven patients who underwent pulmonary metastasectomy

SJR Q1European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic SurgeryOA

OBJECTIVES: Robot-assisted minimally invasive oesophagectomy (RAMIE) enables radical, meticulous dissection of the oesophagus and lymph nodes. Our goal was to identify the effect of the learning curve for RAMIE when performing radical upper mediastinal dissection in patients with oesophageal cancer. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database of patients who underwent RAMIE for oesophageal cancer between May 2008 and July 2016. The gain in proficiency for

SJR Q1European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic SurgeryOA

OBJECTIVES: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment prolongs the progression-free survival of patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer harbouring EGFR mutations. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic factors influencing survival after recurrence, and the effectiveness of EGFR-TKIs in patients with recurrent pulmonary adenocarcinoma after curative resection. METHODS: EGFR mutations were prospectively evaluated in 594 patients who underwent
