Paramyxoviruses, negative-sense single-stranded RNA viruses, pose a critical threat to human public health. Currently, 78 species, 17 genera, and 4 subfamilies of paramyxoviruses are harbored by multiple natural reservoirs, including rodents, bats, birds, reptiles, and fish. Henipaviruses are critical zoonotic pathogens that cause severe acute respiratory distress and neurological diseases in humans. Using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, 115 Crocidura species individuals were ex

SJR Q2Planta Medica

Helicobacter pylori specifically adheres to host cells, mainly based on carbohydrate-mediated cell-cell interactions. Previously, we investigated the anti-adhesive effect of polysaccharide fractions from Artemisia capillaris and Panax ginseng, using hemagglutination and enzyme-linked glycosorbent assays. In the present study, each active polysaccharide fraction was further purified, resulting in a single peak (fraction F2) using gel filtration FPLC, in which no protein content was detectable. Us

SJR Q1American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology

Null alpha1-antitrypsin (alpha1AT) alleles represent the end of a continuum of variants associated with profound alpha1AT deficiency and an increased risk of emphysema. This study characterizes the molecular basis of QOclayton, a new example of an alpha1AT null allele arising from a mutational hot spot in the alpha1AT gene. The QOclayton allele is identical to the normal M1(V213) alpha1AT allele except for an insertion of a cytosine. This insertion occurs in the alpha1AT sequence which normally

SJR Q3Han-guk hyeonmigyeong hakoeji/Applied microscopyOA

Proper sample preparation prior to microscopy is necessary for maintaining the components of tissues in a state as close to a living state as possible. For optimal preservation of biological samples, the sampling conditions are as important as the fixation itself.Various factors influence the selection and fixation efficiencies of a fixative, including sample size, osmolarity, pH, penetration rate and depth, fixative temperature, fixation time, fixative concentration, fixative amount, and retenti

SJR Q1The Laryngoscope

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) originates from regurgitation of gastric contents, a mechanism seemingly identical to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Some researchers postulate a connection between LPR and GERD, whereas some assert LPR is a disease apart from GERD. We examined symptoms of GERD from LPR patients, and performed gastrointestinal endoscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to evaluate GERD findings from these patients. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective

What Is Research Misconducts? Publication Ethics Is as Important as Research Integrity
Chang‐Sub Uhm
SJR Q3Han-guk hyeonmigyeong hakoeji/Applied microscopyOA

Research ethics are mainly of two fields; research integrity and publication ethics. Research misconducts can occur at both areas. Examples of the research integrity violations are falsification, fabrication, and plagiarism; and those of the publication ethics violations are duplicate publication including self-plagiarism, and improper authorship. In this paper, concepts of research misconducts defined in Research Misconduct-related Rules of The Korean Society of Microscopy are explained and dis

Characteristics of Peptide Assimilation by Helicobacter pylori: Evidence for Involvement of Cell Surface Peptidase
윤순규, 최경민, 엄창섭, 박정규, 황세영

Peptide assimilation by Helicobacter pylori wasinvestigated using L-phenylalanyl-3-thia-phenylalanine (PSP)as a detector peptide; the release of thiophenol upon enzymatichydrolysis of PSP was spectrophotometrically detected withthe aid of 5,5'-dithiobis[2-nitrobenzoic acid] (DTNB). By addingPSP to whole-cell suspension, thiophenol was producedprogressively, resembling that found in Esherichia coli orStaphylococcus aureus. Interestingly, the rate of thiophenolproduction by H. pylori in particular

SJR Q3Han-guk hyeonmigyeong hakoeji/Applied microscopy

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a thistle-like annual plant mainly grown in dry hot climates as an oilseed or birdseed. Traditionally, the oil has mainly been sold in the health food market because it is unsaturated having high linoleic and oleic acid levels. With increased health consciousness in recent years, the oil quality has become a more general health issue. This study was designed to understand whether safflower seed powder has positive effects on the fracture healing in rats. Si

Electron Microscopic Study on the Role of Actin Filaments during the Formation of Bile Canaliculi in Isolated Rat Hepatocyte Culture System
Chang-Hyun Park, Byung‐Joon Chang, Chang‐Sub Uhm
SJR Q3Han-guk hyeonmigyeong hakoeji/Applied microscopy

Bile canaliculi are the structure delivering bile secreted by hepatocytes into the bile passage. Bile secretion is mainly controlled by the cytoskeletal elements, mainly of actin in the microvilli, pericanalicular web. Most studies on the bile secretion have been done in viva situation, however, to control the various parameters in vitro culture system seem to be more useful. To set up an in vitro experimental system, the investigator isolated hepatocytes with an enzymatic method using a mixture
